Hi, I am a new clarinet player. I have a plastic Yamaha. I play on an M14 mouthpiece and 3 stregnth Mitchell Lurie Reeds. Is that a good setup?

It really depends on what your aiming at ?

If clarinet will be just a new hobby for a short time, then why not.

Classic setup for beginning clarinettists where I'm living (near Antwerp, in Belgium, Europe, a very little country but with a few great clarinet players, e.g. Walter Boeykens) is :

Buffet E12 (wood !! always better than plastic),
Van Doren mp B40
and VD reeds 2 to start with, a bit stronger if you can handle.

you can't get any more classic than this I guess, but it is not too expensive as a starter, if you plan using it for several years.

But looking around on the BB tells me that the US looks at clarinet a bit different, so .. ?

Top of the bill seems to be R13 over there, which is NOT used over here?

We mostly consider RC as the start for a pro instrument (or clarinet ehtousiast), and if you can affort it go for elite, festival or whatever buffet as to offer extra - at more cost :-)

But at the end, it's the man/woman who has to make it sound !! and the only way to that (if ever) is practicing and a good teacher !!

This is a fine setup for a beginner. Yamaha makes good clarinets even in the plastic version.

Your current equipment should serve you well for years. If you ever advance to the ranks of pro or semi-pro you will probably want something better, but by then you will probably have a good idea of what you want to move up to.
