Hello all. I had played clarinet in high school and college but left it behind to pursue a different career. I've been missing it quite a bit and have decided to pick it up again. Unfortunately my R13 was stolen, so I purchased another R13 off of ebay. I asked the seller various questions about the clarinet's condition and was told there were no chips or cracks; however, upon receiving it I discovered a chip where the upper and lower joints connect. There doesn't appear to be a crack, though I am having it checked out. I just wanted to ask if anybody knows whether or not this will affect either the integrity of the instrument or the quality of the sound. I've attached pictures showing the problem. Any opinions or stories from past experience would be greatly appreciated!!

appears to be minor, shouldn't affect anything.
any decent tech can fix that easily, you shouldn't even be able to find it after its repaired.

Shouldnt be a problem and easily repaired with tenon cap or black epoxy resin molded to the area. You can even do a DIY job and if the outcome is less than cosmetic, a tenon graft can also be done. See Ferrees tools website.

Yay! I was a bit worried going through ebay, but I thought I'd give it a shot.
Not sure if I'm up to DIY yet...does anybody know of a good tech in the San Marcos/Austin/San Antonio TX are?

Since you were "told there were no chips or cracks", the seller should pay for the repair.

Got tired of waiting for the download so didn't see the defect...but it sounds like it's no big deal. The seller really should have mentioned it. Whether it's worth pursuing depends on what you paid for it. If you clean carefully near the defect you might discover a tight crack.

I'll be taking the clarinet to a tech today to see if there's any further damage, but I am certainly going to initiate a dispute with the seller. I ended up paying $950 for this horn - argh. Not sure yet if I should just fix it or send it back and start a new search. The serial date reflects that it was manufactured in 1979, which is around the timeframe I was looking for...bummer. Thanks for the help!

That looks like an extremely minor chip. I would get it filled in. A tenon graft is a bit much I think. Do you like the way the horn plays? If so, keep it. This is why I never buy a horn unless I play it and see it first.

Don't count on it. I got a very badly cracked K series off ebay in June and nothing happened at all. The seller essentially told me where to go and Ebay did absolutely nothing. I emailed the seller and asked specifically if the clarinet had any cracks, etc. before I placed a bid. The seller is a music dealer in Colorado and knew better, but a little greedy I suppose.

i have an ebay horn i need to send to john for rebuild if possible - its a real mess
of course it was sold as being in playing condition, no cracks, etc. ha!
