I'm in the market for a new clarinet and after much reading and listing to folks on this BB, I wanted to try out the Buffet R13, Selmer Signature and the Yamaha Custom AE. Being lead to believe that these brands would be represented at the MMEA this past weekend, I spent the 2 1/2 hour drive (one way) to talk to these people, and perhaps try them out. Needless to say, it was a bit of a let down after getting there at 11:30am on Saturday, and all of them already left!!!
Sorry - I needed to vent.

Barry,
It doesn't sound as if the MMEA was at fault here, but that there was some sort of scheduling issue between when you thought they'd be there and when they actually were there. Were the vendors scheduled to be there longer?

I asked around, and had a chance to talk to some other vendors. They too were a bit upset and suggested that I complain to the chair. They were upset, from what I could gather was because it made the event look sparse.
I was told that they said that the show was not worth their time, so they left.
Now I'm think of going mail order, with two tests. 1) order the three different horns and choose the best. 2) Send them back and order three of the same brand - the one the won the first round.
OR just say the heck with it and order three R13's. At least that would save me some money (shipping, etc)

At the TMEA convention was told that Yamaha was deleting the AE line for their newer CE and SE (my preference) clarinets. You could probably get an AE for a good discount since they retailers will be anxious to get the "old" stock out and the new in.

John is absolutely correct .... there are some unbelievable prices on Yamaha pro level clarinets (while supplies last). WW&BW (read: Woodwind & Breasswind) had quite a few. First price was $1,399 & then I heard of 1,199. I was told that Yamaha had given them an exclusive to WW&BW in liquidating the remaining North American inventory of these clarinets. Of course, nothing substitutes for making a phone call & finding out first hand.
