I am playing in the pit orchestra for the musical "Chicago" this Fall. The first clarinet player had to drop out and I will be playing that part. I have never done smears before and need help. Can you help me with this?

Certainly........... search immediately above for "smear", or "glissando", or "Rhapsody in Blue", where you'll find a wealth of info and many different ways to approach this phenomenon.

I do glisses by dropping 70-80% of my embouchure pressure at the beginning of the gliss, then as I smoothly finger a chromatic scale, I gradually restore embouchure pressure (for going up at least). I have no idea if this is the right way to do it or not, but with some practice it has worked OK for me.

I heard you have to constrict your throat as if being sick, then gradually relax it. This way you can do glissandos without altering embouchure pressure.
Can anyone expand upon this method for me please?
