 Pomarico not perfect
Author: jangjiman

I just recieved my new pomarico. One complaint Ihave is that the mouthpiece doesn't seem to be finished in a clean manner. The part where the "Gem" is embedded, is not clean just (jagged). Is this normal is a crystal mouthpiece? Maybe because it's hand made?

My pomarico isn't smooth over there either. I can only guess that it was drilled and embedded last thing in the process and they didn't bother smoothing it out after drilling that little hole (and probably chipping it slightly as the bit went in). The hand made part refers to the facing of the mouthpiece. Pretty much everything else would be machine made (mold, cork, metal around the bottom, and etching in the mouthpiece).

I am not sure the hole for the gem is drilled. Really doesn't matter, mine is the same way. I know 2 others that own a Pomarico and thiers are the same. You would think with what we had to pay for the piece that it would have a cleaner finish. Well at least mine plays well. How about yours?

i'm sure that some part of these mouthpieces are "hand made"
but i really really doubt that it is the "facing" part of the affair.... almost every mass producer of mouthpieces machines the facings, and given the difficulty of facing crystal, and volume of sales i doubt Pomarico are an exception....
however it's most likely you have a very good mouthpiece and i wouldn't worry about something that has no bearing on how it plays
keep playing the good tunes

Something annoying about the Bb Pomaricos is the little coloured stone which makes it difficult to use the Vandoren Optimum ligature. I would think they figured it by now and make the stone shorter or more into the crystal or something (or even better remove those silly stones altogether).

My Pomarico mpc has the stone completely recessed below the surface, so I am able to use an Optimum lig.

Just looked at my Pomarice, and the 'stone' is below the surface and does not interfere with the lig. I use a Vandoren Optimum as my primary lig and have had no interference between the stone and lig. I've used this combination for about 15 months .... not a problem.

can you guys post what reed brand and strength you use on you pomaricos? Also maybe you could state your type such as saphire mellow. I'm trying to figure out which reeds to use and my vandoren 3 1/2 don't seem right.

The Pomarico web site lists all the mouthpieces, their specs and recommended reed strengths:

My Pomarico is the saphire B. That's the brighter piece. I use Vandoren V12, # 3 reed. I just got box of Mitchell Lurie # 3 to try out. Have only tried one reed so far, so have no real opinion about them as yet.
