 A Reed Change...
Author: Amanda S

Ok, so I play the blue box Traditional Vandorens on a M13 mp, a Buffet E11, and a Rovner Dark ligature. My tone seems bright, but also dull. I don't know if that's possible, but that's how it sounds to me...With the setup I have, what reeds would give me a darker/fuller/richer sound?
Thanks, Amanda

Vandoren Blue Box reeds are built on a thin blank template (2.8 mm at the heel and .085 mm at the tip)

You certainly could experiment with a thicker blank reed. Most measure approximately 3.15 mm at the heel and .10 mm or .11 mm at the tip.

Gonzalez FOF, Grand Concert, V12, and Mozart are just some examples of the more popular thicker blank reeds.

That is certainly not to say that a darker, full bodied sound is not possible with a thinner blank reed.

It absolutely is possible -

You just have to have the correct sound conception in your head ...GBK

Thanks, I'll try some of those. On the subject of "the correct sound conception"...which clarinetists and recordings should I listen to?

The Rovner Dark can give you a dull sound too. Consider trying a Vandoren Optimum Ligature. When students come to me and I have them try other Ligatures, it's like taking a blanket off of the mouthpiece. The Rovner Eddie Daniels is very good too as well as many other brands out there which work quite well.

There are many different threads that talk about good clarinet sounds, you should do a search(my favorite is Harold Wright).
