Is it possible to make a homemade Galper-style register tube vent if the register key pad already raises high enough to accomodate an externally extended tube?
Ideas for homemade or hardware store bought materials which could be used anyone? thanks
I don't know why these links are automatically being inserted in here..........does anyone else see them on the words "hardware store" or "key pad"??? Moderators go ahead and make them not links if you want.

Probably not - your register key doesn't go up nearly that high.
Did you see the photo's on my page?

Mr. Blumberg I'm sorry to make a post which does not help your business, to say the least, but I'm pretty sure the register key on this thing does come up that high. And even if it wasn't that high, if I figured out how to extend the vent at least a little bit, it would still help, wouldn't it? I don't know about the angle of the pad--the pad will probably have to be adjusted; remember I'm not talking about my Buffet here--not yet.

Take some caution in this modification...
The vent hole can be easily cracked (not that I know anything about that...)
if the vent is too deeply wedged into place, as the vent tube is tapered.
The depth to which the vent tube reaches the interior of the clarinet and the overall length of the tube are not trivial - and can cause some chuffing between some intervals.
Also, the total cost for fabrication of the second key after you break the first one will roughly equal the Galper vent - which is a drop in fit for modern R13s
(I think after 120,000 serial number.)
The RC model incorporates a much deeper vent tube that is placed higher toward the barrel, so Abe was onto something with this design...

It's actually good for any R-13
Pre- 300,000 serial # had a different screw size than is now. So there are 2 register keys that are made so that both era's can use it.
The Galper tube won't crack anything as by design it can't be inserted too far - the housing on the top (what the pad hits) basically acts as the stop.
disclaimer btw: I don't get paid by the Galper's for my help with the tube. He used to send me a book or 2 for helping him, but have never in 6 years gotten a cent, and didn't want to either for helping him with the sales. Now his son is handling the shipping and I still help him (as the sales of it helps Abe's Widow) in that same capacity to market it. Abe was a great guy and it was an honor to help him.

Thanx, Mark, didn't realize how far back it [I] went. All I recall trying to say to Tyler [et al] was that [in research] its a good idea to review what is known, before "re-inventing the wheel". Register vent problems and the consequent poor "pinch" Bb date back into the 1800's !! Luck, Don

Yeah, before I do any permament modification, if I happen to figure out a way to do that, I'll definitely do some more research on the history of the Boehm mechanism and its problems and all of the necessary compromises with tone hole placement and such.
