Does anyone know of any interesting music stores in Manhattan? I'll be there on vacation. I'm interested in clarinets, saxes and anything klezmer related. Thanks

Rod Baltimore has a shop, I believe called Woodwind and Brass, on 48th and Broadway. Many vintage and metal clarinets and saxes priced very well.

My aunt just bought me a vintage R-13 from that shop I believe (she said it was on Broadway)!!! They are checking it before they send it to me. My aunt said that they were really nice, and play-tested the instrument for her. Check it out!!!

Tony Salimbene at Roberto's on 46th.Street
Roberto's Woodwind Repair Shop (between 6th and 7th Aves.)

I have good experience with Roberto's Woodwind. I think they have two stores very close to each other, one if for repairs like John wrote above and one is the actual store (I'm 100% sure about this though, maybe everything in in one store).

You have to visit the Vandoren Artists Studio at 250 West 54th Street (same building as Jimmy Yan). Call ahead to make an appointment, hours are variable. I think the number is still: 212-399-9457. You can test every Vandoren product there, and also purchase them. They usually have mouthpieces that many stores don't have in stock. The cost is actually charged through any music store they have a relationship with - in NYC or elsewhere. David Gould will also explain to you the Vandoren perspective on reed quality and variability within a box.

Also at 250 West 54th Street is Franks Music - incredibly knowledgeable staff, amazing selection of music, and very expensive. But its always fun to browse their clarinet bin (most of the music is in stacks behind the counter).

Robertos on 46th Street is for repairs, used mouthpieces, new and vintage, saxes and clarinets, and roberto himself.

Robertos on 48th Street (upstairs across the street from the Rod Baltimore shops) is for mostly brass instruments, but also good selection of ligatures and accessories for clarinet and sax. Sometimes, if one store is out of something (say, alto clarinet reeds of a certain strength) the other will have it.

If you really have time, pay a visit to Guy Chadash - try his mouthpieces, barrels and clarinets: 440 West 41st Street, tel: 212-239-7187.
