Selmer Series clarinets

Hello everyone,

Could someone please inform me on if there ever was a Selmer Series 9* A clarinet. How long was the approximate production of this horn? Also, any one know of ones for sale?

Also, I am looking for information or thoughts on the Selmer Series 9 A clarinet. Was there any major likes or dislikes on the horn? Was the production of this horn seemingly smaller than that of the R-13 A?

I know there was one... but I don't really know anything about them. I think that Selmer A clarinets must not have been that good or something because I never really see or hear of them out there... any series or model. Good luck with your search!

Selmer series 9 was an excellent horn. These could be ordered as matched sets (both Bb and A), cut from the same batch of wood. Many professionals used these horns, but not nearly as many as used Buffet. These were made during the late 60 through about 1972 when they were replaced by the Series 10. Because their production run was much shorter than the R-13 and because Buffet dominated the top end market in this country at that time, you are not likely to find many Series 9 A clarinets.

A matter of fact is that few college students at this time would buy A clarinets, instead they tended to simply use school instruments (which were often cheaper Leblancs). This limited the market for A clarinets, in general, to professionals only.

Their rarity is definitely not the result of inferior quality. The Series 9 was a big bore straight tone hole instrument similar to early R-13s, but with a character all its own. The keywork was excellent, superior to most newer instruments (you could also still get solid silver and not just plate).
