Hi - thanks for taking the time to read this post - I really need it! I recently found a Clarinet in my attic (bit of a mystery how it got there...), and need some help with it. Please find a picture attatched. On the base is a pressed mark that reads 'EARLHAM' in large capitals, and under that in smaller print 'Supervised by French Technicians'.

Although I am not familiar with this make of clarinet, be aware that "supervised by French technicians" is probably a euphemism for "made by Chinese factory workers".

IMHO - Your pics are too dark to be of much help. The Selmer mp is prob. not related to the cl. Viewing the long and straight high trill key is reminiscent of a [lower] model of the Leblanc family, Vito/Normandy etc. The name Earlham sounds "British", ??Boosey-Hawkes??, but many better-sounding names are used for "stencilled inst's" . As said, "French techs", is little if any help. Is it wood or plastic ? Quite old? If wood and ?playable?, perhaps modest value, prob no rarity. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

isidian -

An attic find argues that it predates the invasion of Chinese CSOs (clarinet shaped objects). On the other hand, the case looks new, as does the instrument. The photos are rather dark. How does the condition look in bright light?

The "jump" trill keys say to me that it could be a Vito stencil.

What does it smell like when you open the case? Is it fairly clean, or does it have the musty "old horn" odor?

Are the corks real strips of bark or are they made of glued together crumbs?

Is the body plastic or wood?

Any additional information will help.

The "Earlham" brand extends to beginning flutes, clarinets and alto saxes.

I would suspect that this model and "company" is producing a product very similar to the many Chinese imports which are flooding the market in the USA.

If so, the value and quality is mininal.

Here is a review of the Earlham Alto Sax.

It seems that the reviewer had a few issues with the quality:

Right - to answer the questions...
It is made I think of a wood-finished Resin (I work with these materials)

It is reasonably clean, though the mouthpiece seems to be a little 'tarnished' (can't think of a better word)

It smells quite musty, but that might be the smell of 'old breath'?

The cork strips seem to be made of real bark

Brighter light - it's quite shiny, but not 'plasticy' - photos can be sent if necessary

Oh, and one more thing - The case has a sticker in it - an American Music Shop...and I found a dime (25 cents?(sorry - I'm English!)) in the bottom dated 1971.

Please reply Soon...

Near as I can tell your instrument is worth $23 to $50 if it plays and plays in tune. If it doesn't play in tune, then all bets are off. I suspect your local music store won't even buy it from you.

You might get more for it by donating it to a school and writing it off on your taxes. Or maybe you can make a nice lamp out of it and get $50 on eBay. Good luck to you sir.

Ok - I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed, but hey-ho, I haven't lost anything...
Anyways, I'd just like to thank you all so very much for your help - you've all been friendy, and I've never been to forum quite like this one before - where you can post a message and see a response within minutes! Anyway, thanks again,
isidian

Interesting that a horn/case that looks like this would be in an "attic" since both look to be fairly new despite the photo quality. It does look like it is not wood. I don't like the word resin used in relation to "plastic" clarinets...as it's just more mumbo jumbo marketing fog. Perhaps some marketing guy put it in your attic.
