I heard some wonderful music on thursday. Dennis Russel Davies conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony came through my home town, and among a beautiful program (brahms haydn var, mahler totenfeir, a modern piece by von einem) was the schubert 3. The principal clarinet played on the traditional german system, and he played superbly!! something occurred to me during the schubert...schubert _really_ knew how to write for ww, especially the clarinet. I think as clarinet musicians, it behooves us to carefully study schubert's music, especially his symphonies and der hirt auf dem felsen, a trio for soprano, clarinet, and piano. IMHO, it doesn't get much better or challenging than schubert, and we should have his music as part of our clarinetistry...

I agree. I play Schubert lieder with a pianist friend. Just take the voice part and transpose two semitones. They sound great.

Ageed! Another good Schubert piece written for soprano, clarinet & piano is his Romanze (Die Verschworenen). I am currently trying to locate a good soprano who can sing it in German and who has very little vibrato. It just isn't the same sung in English. It is very moving. If you want to get the music, it is available from Oxford Univ. Press (arranged by Fritz Spiegl). Cheers. gnj
