What is the youngest student you've had that could play a passable rendition of:

Karl Stamitz 3rd Clarinet Concerto,
Xavier Pokorny Clarinet Concerto,
Mozart Clarinet Concerto,
Weber First Clarinet Concerto,
Weber Concertino,
Weber Clarinet Quintet.

Thanks, GBK.

By "passable," I mean satisfactory to the youngun's teacher --s/he is willing to take the youngster out in public to perform.

In 1962 at Interlochen, I heard Lorin Levee (now co-principal in Los Angeles) play a not merely pasable, but stunning performance of the Spohr Concerto #1. He was about 10 years old and had been playing for a year or so.

And of course there's Julian Bliss.

back in the late 80's I had a student in 7th grade (12) play (and win) the Weber Concertino for the Interlochen Concerto Competition and was placed into the finals of the senior division concerto competition. Had played for just 2 years.

He was the 1st one at Interlochen in 10 years to have that done to (Detroit Free Press wrote that). At 16 he performed (live performance & on the radio and in a master class for Claude Frank / Curtis) the Bartok Contrasts and Stravinsky L'Histoire Trio in the same weekend at age 16.

Another player, Michael Rusineck at 15 was truly a monster

Julian Bliss is a very unique player. Very, very musically mature at his young age. Not for his young age, at his young age (his CD is very good)

I started playing Clarinet in 7th grade

So did Ricardo Morales

Didn't slow down either of us. Maybe I would have been better if I had started younger, but then again, maybe I would have given it up to do something else like it happens sometime to 6th graders who started in 4th.

Fun Fact: I taught a 2nd Chair Indiana All-State Clarinetist (after she got her degree) : 1st chair that year was...........

Ricardo

:)

It's a real small world
