Does anybody know if most Dixieland clarinet players used Bb clarinets back in the day or if they used a plethora of different horns?

Hello,

I never really thought about what keys clarinets were in for old dixieland players. I have seen several photos of street dixieland bands in New Orleans where the clarinetist was playing an e-flat clarinet.

I think you'll find that many early jazzmen were ex-military, or at least used ex-military instruments. So they'd have used whatever military bands used. Unlikely to find clarinets in A or C, therefore.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Depends on how far back you're talking about. My impression is that they used Albert or other non-Boehm systems very early on but don't know about tuning. Another impression is that metal and hard rubber were popular horn materials vs wood. These are just impressions.

I generally agree with Bob D, likely using what they have/had, with choice, and before amplification, prob C's or Eb's to be heard over brass and crowd "noises", without the altissimo sounds. Most of the oldies I have are B's [Bb's] HP or LP, playing old Dixie shows what was needed. Don
