Aussies - horror, horror - tonight on Aunty would love to hear what you think of this arrangement - sounds like an awful thing to do to the Copland, but at least it's performed by a consumate artist:

All the members of the Marsalis family are great artists and I would guess
that Branford will not let you or Copland down. Lucky Aussies.

Hi,
If you have not heard Branford Marsalis play the soprano sax, you are in for a treat. On the album Romances for Saxophone, his readings of many very familiar works from the French literature are lovely (but I play soprano sax a lot so...). I am sure the techincally the Copland will be outstanding.
If you are not familiar with saxophone literature, a great of the major works have been composed only in the last 1/2 century. So a good deal of the performance materials are transcriptions of oboe and even flute masterpieces. Why not the Copland or any of the other mainstays in the clarinet literature. While the sax's 2 1/2 octave primary range will come up a little shy and there are some octave changes needed IMO that's OK.

I heard BM intervewed and play just a little - he came across as very competent and unassuming....also heard and seen last night was Bob Wilber @ Ascona, playing good soprano sax and clarinet - this was on Foxtel. Any Aussies see this? I'm curious as to Bob's setup - looked like a crystal clarinet m/p but that's all I could make out, plus curved sop and Boehm clarinet.

Apparently it's sold out but hopefully I get a cancellation seat

Having now listened to this concert (which was quite nice I must admit). I must say I prefer the Copland on the clarinet (not surprisinly).
Marsalis' playing was really very, very good (a couple of blemishes, but Christ, it was live and he was playing the saxophone afterall).
My only other comment: Debussy once said the saxophone reminded him of a lawn-mower ...

PS - Before you run down the Marsalis clan, it should be noted that they are an entire family of WORKING musicians. This is difficult for one member of the family, let alone 4!
