I'm sure that most of you are familiar with the wonderful and unique piece for unaccompanied clarinet by Willson Osborne called "Rhapsody". My copy for soprano clarinet was published by Peters in 1958. I have performed this piece on soprano clarinet and on bass clarinet. I have also heard it performed on bassoon. A friend of mine (and an excellent bass clarinetist) told me that the original was for bass clarinet). My questioon is: Does anyone know on what instrument the composer originally intented this piece to be played?

Very briefly:
Osborne approached Sol Schoenbach with the idea to compose a piece for radio station WNYC's broadcast of contemporary American music.
The original title of the piece was Study for Bassoon but was later published in 1958 as Rhapsody for Bassoon.
While composing the piece Osborne decided to revise it and make the work suitable for clarinet as well.

GBK:
Thanks so much for your quick and enlightening response. I just finished reading the article by Mr. Riseling and it is very informative (Somehow I had missed reading it before). This info. will benefit my students. I currently have an advanced high school senior who plans to use the Rhapsody as a piece for college auditions next spring. He plans to play the Brahms Son. #2 on soprano and the Rhapsody on bass. Thanks again for your help.

It was written for bassoon and later revised by the composer for clarinet.

Speaking of bassoon works, has anyone heard Richard Stolzman (sorry if I spelt it incorrect) play the Mozart Bassoon Concerto on Clarinet?
I think it's very interesting to hear original compositions played by different instruments. Here's a link if you want to hear: http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000003EZN/103-6748152-8008623?%5Fencoding=UTF8&coliid=&colid=

Why doesn't everyone just email GBK personally since he knows so much, why even have a bboard?

Bb for brilliant but maybe edgy, A for dark and smooth but maybe stuffy.
