 Instrument Repair

I need to have my instrument looked at by someone in the D.C. area. I have had a difficult time finding someone good to carry my instrument to. If anyone has any suggestions or numbers of a place I can call I would greatly appreciate it.

Lee Lachman is the guy! He's in College Park, MD, and I have no reluctance taking my horns to him (from Richmond, VA). He's a master technician, and charges reasonable rates, also. He works by appointment only.

Phone: 301-345-3389
e-mail: llwws@abs.net

You'll be pleased with his work.

Tony Valenti in Alexandria, VA does good work at a fair price. I know several people in premier DC military bands that take their instruments to them. His phone number is: 703-780-4322
He's a really nice guy too, likes to talk with you while he works on your instrument.

Is Tony Valenti dealing directly with the public again? He did the dent work on my bass saxophone in 1996 or 1997. He's got a reputation as a brilliant repairman. For a long time, though, he was only working through other repair shops. Tony Valenti does have a reputation for liking to talk, and ten years ago, anyway, that meant he was heavily into evangelical Christian proseletizing and he could get very emotional on the subject. He quizzed customers about their beliefs, asking if they'd been saved and so forth, and delivered lengthy sermons. However, if he's dealing directly with the public again, it may be that he's stopped the preaching.

I highly recommend Peter Ferrante at Presto Brass & Woodwind, too. He's worked on several clarinets and saxophones for me and has always done an excellent job. When I took my bass sax to him, he farmed out the dent work to Tony Valenti and I got back a first-rate job all around, on a sax that was heavily damaged (previous owner had dropped it).

Hmm, I don't remember if he asked me that question or not. I think he must be working with the public again, he responded to my phone call, and I made an appointment to have my thumbrest moved up a bit to make the instrument more ergonomic and checked to make sure everything was sealing. He did a really nice job. That was last April I think.

Hello,

I've recently met perhaps the best clarinet repairman in NYC now. He happens to be coming down to my house (30 minutes east of Washington, D.C.) next Thursday and Friday. He worked on my clarinet a couple of weeks ago and I was completely amazed at how much better it plays now. Honestly, I didn't think there was anything wrong with it, except that it had a slight leak at the low e/middle register b pad. That was what I had him look at, then he completely redid my instrument. Of all the repairmen I have used before, this is the guy! If you're interested, I'll put you in touch with him, or you can come to my house next week. Just let me know.

I would second the notion of lee lachman. I was taking my clarinet to a very expensive and somewhat difficult to deal with repairman in philadelphia. In a pinch i took some work to Lachman, who i live less then ten minutes from. The next time i went to Philly to get work done, this repairman inspected my clarinets and praised the work that had been, at this point, i thought to myself "What the hell am i bothering with this guy!" Since then i have had nothing but top quality work from Lachman, extremely reasonable price, and fast service. Lachman is someone who really understands professional musicians, and he is a great guy, especially if u want to discuss the Baltimore orioles.
