 Advice on Practicing

Hey,

I'm in need of advice on what to practice and for how long. Right now i'm practicing for about 4 1/2 hours a day since it's summer but i would like it to be 6 hours a day. I'm wondering what are your practice schedules so I can get a feel for how long to practice and things. Thanks a lot!

it's not only the length of time but the QUALITY of that time.

practice slowly and above all remain FOCUSED. So focused that when practicing legato for example, mentally 'see and feel' your fingers falling to the next note.
When practicing tonguing, mentally 'see' your tongue tip approaching the reed.

Practicing slowly will afford you, among other refinements, the control you are looking to gain and, eveness and finger speed

take breaks every 15 minutes or so

some mentod books ( and numerous other books) have a section/chapeter devoted to 'how to practice'.

If you do a search on the BB, look for articles on Practicing, offered by Sherman Friedland. He also has a web site so you can search google.

now go practice....slowly

GBK recently posted a schedule that you might want to look at:

Rashad,

You seem like a very dilligent student, and that is a great thing. I would like to re-affirm what was mentioned above. The best way to practice is in a deeply focused, almost meditative state. When you are really able to achieve such a state, the length of time becomes unimportant. I would suggest setting a simple goal at the beginning of each practice, and when you feel that, via your meditative practice session, you have made progress in achieving this goal, its time to chill and go eat a fudge pop, or perhaps do what i do, go golfing.

I would say that 6 hrs a day won't accomplish much more than 4.5 hrs if those hours are spent in a frenzied state, and not with true focus. I know few clarinetists that can truly maintain a focused, meditative state for that long.

BTW, focused means so focused you don't even hear the telephone ring

"I know few clarinetists that can truly maintain a focused, meditative state for that long."

Or at all.....especially those of us who are constantly being interrupted by our kids/spouses! LOL
