 A good low "E"?
Author: Amanda S

On a piece I'm playing for an audition, there is a three beat low E. It's played at fortissimo. How can I make this sound pretty? I have more than three months, so I can do some sustained work on it. Thanks,
Amanda

hey,
a low E is normally a very easy note to make "nice." My only tip that i can give you is to not blow too much of air into your clarinet, and make sure that your fingers are covering the holes completely! GOOD LUCK!

I get this buzzy tone on low E's and sometimes long B's probably because of the bell's ring working loose, and to fix it I usually just use a more 'forward' tongue position. Trying to use a more pronounced "eeh" syllable while playing might help. Richard Yeager, who is a great woodwinds instructor, gave me this tip for smoothing out my tone in a master class.

good luck
