 Luyben Ligature Instructions
Author: Scott
Date:   2005-07-22 01:11

I met with Annette Luyben today. She said that there is no difference in the ligature due to color. She does get a kick out of all the speculation though.

She also said that you need to condition your ligature before using it. Place the ligature on your clarinet and tighten the screws down as far as you can go (leaving about 1/8 inch of the screw showing) and leave it overnight. This helps stretch the ligature and compresses the fins to the mouthpiece.

She also said to loosen and/or tighten the upper screw to adjust the reed to the best playing position. She said the to try the upper screw and if it doesn't help, try the lower. She said the screw position can make a big difference in the tone from your reed.

My own method is to "hydrate" the lig overnight first by putting it in a closed container with a damp sponge. .....then do as Annette suggested.
