 B45 vs B45 13 Series Mouthpiece
Author: WorldIRC

I was at work today and noticed that there is a B45 13 series in my system. What is the difference between the 13 series B45 and the regular B45 mouthpieces.

The '13' series is supposedly tuned to A440 where as the regular B45 is
A442. Also, the '13 series normally has the profile 88 shape.

Does this 13 series play better on the R13 then a regular B45?

It plays a little lower in pitch due to the slightly larger bore, but remember that tuning depends on many factors including barrel length, the players emboucure and even the ambient room temperature.

The R13 is designed to play at A440 with a 66mm barrel and at A442 with a
65mm barrel, and the '13' series was originally created to play with a lower pitch like the classic American mouthpieces. (Chedeville etc...) American orchestras traditionally tune somewhat lower than European orchestras, and I believe the first '13' series mouthpiece was actually the M13 designed for Donald Montanaro of the Philadelphia orchestra.

Whether or not the '13' series is a better match for the R13 is somewhat speculative. I think the best thing to do is to sit down with a number of different mouthpieces, a tuner, and maybe another clarinetist, and choose the mouthpiece which offers the desired tone and tuning.

Heheh.. you know what....For the next 2 weeks, my department manager is on vacation....and seeing as I'm the "woodwind guy" at my work, I'm just gonna order a few mouthpieces and try em out. I'm in a good position for free trialing.
