Hi,

I am soon to be getting a new clarinet (R13 silver plated) and I was wondering, what kinds of mouthpieces are out there that responds to every thing, I need a mouthpiece that has no problem with articulations and has a wide sepectrom to reed selections and wether to buy an open face or a closed faced mothpiece, I would ask my teacher but he is out of town, and I need to know and what should I look for when buying a new ligature what are the brands you recommend I know that it has to be to my personal preference but I still need help! and I feel like you guys are the ones to help me, but anyways what would go great with a R-13 Buffet clarinet, thanks so much you guys hope to hear from you soon.

How long is your teacher out of town? Can you use your current mp until he/she gets back?

Would it not be better to get used to your new instrument for a while, then later on make a descision on mouthpieces?

Greg Smith's mpcs are supposed to go well with R-13. Walter Graebner is another mpc maker who will apparently make his pieces tosuit what you want.

You can't go wrong with a Vandoren long facing mouthpiece like the M15, M13, or M30. They have rich and colorful sounds. These are mass-produced, however, so if you want to spend more money, maybe a handcrafted mouthpiece is the way to go. Gigliotti P or P34 (?) models produce a very deep tone but I would worry about articulation with those. I've always wanted to try a Pomarico crystal Emerald or Ruby model. I haven't tried any Greg Smiths but I hear from many people that they are wonderful. Maybe try a Gennusa mouthpiece (feels somewhat similar to my VD M15). Just remember to try each mouthpiece with a good variety of reeds or else you're just testing your brand/strength of reeds; what you want to do is test the MOUTHPIECE so be flexible with reed choice.

Ligatures: I have a strong opinion on this, but find what is right for you. However, I would say definitely go with some hybrid fabric/metal model. Some choices for this type are: Rovner Eddie Daniels II; BG Revelation or Super Revelation. I prefer this type of ligature because the metal plates seem to aid in projection but the fabric prevents the tone from getting too bright. Although this is what I play on, I would also recommend that you try a Bonade inverted silver ligature, and if you have the money, then maybe a Vandoren Optimum ligature.

Good luck!
-Tyler

I suggest waiting until your teacher gets back and ask him to come with you to choose. Any good mouthpiece will good on a R13 imo, at least I've never played a good mouthpiece that didn't sound good on a R13.
