Besides the great jazz clarinetist's, Chuck Hedges, Eddie Daniels, and Bill Smith, does anyone know of other jazz clarinetists who are still alive and have recorded cd's.

Kenny Davern, my favorite, has a couple of dozen cds on the market.
His most recent recordings are on the Arbors label. Kenny still performs around the country and in Europe.

Thanks alot for the names of these Jazz artists that you guys mentioned...
Have any of you heard "Buster Bailey play? He was taught by the same teacher that Benny Goodman had. Benny said that Buster was the greatest technician he had ever heard play a clarinet...There is a single track of Buster playing on the cd: "The Illustrious Clarinetists of Jazz: 1927-1949. The piece he is playing is called:"Man With A Horn Goes Berserk," which is on track #12.
Does anyone have an LP or cd of Buster Bailey playing other tunes? From listening to him play that one track, I can't imagine anyone playing faster than him and with as much soul.

I have a CD of a band led by trumpet player and singer Henry "Red" Allen which features Buster Bailey extensively. It's an all-star band that includes Coleman Hawkins. I can't recall the title but the material is mostly traditional stuff, such as St James Infirmary and Algiers Bounce. Original recording was in the '50's. Lots of long but listenable solos, trades, etc. Buster soars.
As I say, I can't recall the title or where I have it right now, but if you search the right websites...

Thanks for the info on Buster Bailey....And I just found a complete cd of him on Amazon. The cd is from the: "Jazz Archives," series and is called: "The Buster Bailey Story. The cd has him playing 20 tracks including that fantastic piece I previously mentioned called: "Man With A Horn Goes Berserk."
You have to buy the cd to hear that piece, however. That track was the only one that Amazon would not let you listen to of all the samples. And now I know why!!!

I'm going on memory, but there's a Japanese jazz clarinetist named (I believe) Eiji Kitiwara (approximately) who's pretty hot, plays on a Buddy deFranco level.

I just heard Buddy DeFranco a few months ago and besides being a little out of tune and almost not playing any note under C4 he was amazing. He played with an Italian clarinetist who had unbelievable technique, but I preferred DeFranco's playing much more.
Louis Sclavis is my favorite clarinetist and is still alive and keep making excellent CDs. Not only is he amazing on both clarinet and bass clarinet, his music is very original and interesting. I have almost all his CDs and they are all great.
David Murray plays jazz bass clarinet (and I think contra-alto too) and is pretty good. He can get a little annoying sometimes so I can't listen to him for very long.
Don Byron has excellent technique and sound both on clarinet and bass clarinet. Some of his stuff I like a lot and some is not so good. I saw a concert with him called "Mahller In Jazz" and he was great.
Good luck.

Just found that Japanese clarinetist on Amazon. His name is spelled: Eiji Kitamura," and he has 3 cd's with the jazz painist, Teddy Wilson...The price of these cd's is kind of high-priced, but I guess that's because they are imports.

I do believe "Alvin Batiste" is still alive, kicking and recording; last I checked he was also on staff at Southern University in New Orleans. And, Dixieland/trad legend "Jack Maheu" (my reason for living) is still gracing the horn part-time at 93-plus. v/r Ken

Buster Bailey also recorded with Fletcher Henderson (and Louis Armstrong) in the early 1920s, as well as numerous occasions with Billie Holiday and Teddy Wilson in the mid/late 1930s (including Lester Young).
Here's a MP3 clip of Bailey with Billie: http://www.opuscds.com/track/45149
