Hi, can anyone recommend a music writing program I can use with my midi keyboard and computer. I purchased Cakewalk scorewriter and I'm having a really hard time getting it to work. I have tried everything but I can't get it to play back and now it won't write what I'm playing. Even when I quantize, it still will not write exactly what I play. I've even tried easy songs like mary had a little lamb!! Is there an easier program to work with that anybody can recommend. Thanks ahead for the input.

I've recently started playing with a demo version of Sibelius. From what I see it is one of the most comprehensive notation programs I've seen. The only drawback is it's not cheap. Regular selling price is $599, educational price is $299.

Check out www.sibelius.com

I've been using Cakewalk Overture 2.0 for the past year or so and have found it a little difficult to learn, but very good. I've also heard good things about Finale 2000, but haven't tried a demo of it yet.

I agree, Sibelious is the best product I've used, for me even better than Finale.

If you want to go a little cheaper than that, Voyetra's MIDI Orchestrator Plus is a good one.

Gee, I've been pretty happy with the shareware ($40, to get the licence) Noteworthy composer. I think that entering rhythm for the keyboard is pretty hopeless, unless you are completely dead on- if that's the problem. Anyway you can try a demo free of the web of noteworthy. Trying it is worth the price, certainly.

I too use Noteworthy, basically as a very easy way of jotting down musical notes and transposing. I never tried its MIDI capabilities, since the sound of my computer trying to make music drives me up the wall, but for what I use it for, Noteworthy is superb and well worth the money.

I've tried a program called Mozart mostly for notation and transposition. Entering music is pretty painless. I'm not sure about the MIDI stuff however. Also, it's pretty cheap: Around $80 US I think. You can download a trial verion for free though.

I've been trying Braeburn Software's "Music Publisher" and find it the easiest of all I've tried.. the one drawback may be not being able to play it back, but, for me, that's not a consideration. I write a phrase, play it on the horn, tweak it .. re-write it, and so on. Not having the computer play it back is not a detriment, IMO.

I've been using PrintMusic 2000 from Coda Music, (the Finale people), and I'm very pleased with its ease of use, and capabilities. You can download a demo from the Coda Music web site www.codamusic.com

Good luck.

I LOVE Mozart too, but it doesn't have anything to do with MIDI. For everything else it's my favorite, but if I want to work with MIDI, I used orchestrator plus...both are great for their separate uses. Just a commercial.
