 stamina/throat oddities

Has anyone had a strange and uncontrollable sensation in their throat when you are tiring.

This happened to me the other day. As you are blowing, a funny buzzing noise appears in your throat, and makes you feel like no matter what you do, the air you a blowing is not able to get out of your mouth and down the clarinet.

Very wierd. It happened after playing for about 3 hours, which isn't normally too much of a problem, but as I played the last movement of Schumann Fantasiestucke it began. I think it is something to do with this particular movement having little space for a good breather too.

Any one with suggestions of preventing this?

You are probably experiencing a leak in your soft palate. Air is escaping through your nose, which is why it doesn't seem like it's going into the instrument. I'm not exactly sure what causes it, besides fatigue. When I was having trouble with it a few years back, my teacher and I theorized that it might be my allergies irritating my throat. It eventually went away, but for a while I had strict instructions to stop playing whenever it happened so as not to irritate things further.

I think there are also several threads on this in the archives if you do a search for "soft palate leak". Good luck!

wow, funny you should mention this... i was going to post about the same exact thing..but i didnt know how to put it into words exactly... so THANKS studioline, yeah i have no idea what this is but its really irritating, i was playing a big long show with one of the orchestras i play in, and our last piece was tchaik 5 and its a really long piece....and after playing de falla and something else...i cant even remember haha. but anyway, we got to the last movement of the tchaik and i couldnt play anymore and the air just kept coming out of my nose, and this is that first time it happened so i have been wondering about it ever since that concert and now it happens routinley whenever i play for more than 2 or 2 1/2 hours at a time so im stumped.... ANY HELP WOULD BE WONDERFUL!!!!! thanks again studioline for posting this

-Good luck,
Kevin

I had something strange like this happen for a while. For me it was a tension thing. I moved down a reed strength and tried to make a resonant sound without tensing up my throat at all. After a couple of weeks I moved back to normal strength and I have been fine ever since.

I think I was using my throat to focus the sound and give it some ring but that robbed me of a lot of flexibility and very noticeably reduced my stamina. Not sure if this is your problem. I investigated the palatal air leak and I am not sure if the two are related (though one article I read about it suggested that it may be the result of a resistant set-up). Either way, see if removing any tension in your throat helps.

I have just played through the full program with my pianist of my up and coming Wednesday recital with barely any breaks to test my stamina.

Fortunately the same thing DID NOT happen, which has rid my paranoia for now. I think for me, it was just the fact that we had been rehearsing continuously for about 4 hours so I was really fatigued.

Anyway wish me luck, I am performing Weber Grand Duo Concertant (inspired by a fellow clarinet bboarder Dannyboy, previously RAMman!), Schumann Fantasiestucke, and Muczynski Time Pieces!

I find that when that happens, there is too much pressure in my mouth, forcing the soft pallet back. This usually happens when you get tired. I find that stretching my muscles in my throat/neck helps. If you're practicing, take a break, and come back when you're a little more fresh. In a concert, well, if you have rests, try to relax, swallow, breath normally, when you can. That's the only advice I can think of.
