I bought a refaced Mitchell-Lurie with the advice to use 4-1/2 Mitchell-Lurie reeds with it.
I love the combination, and found that almost every reed in the box would work very nicely. When I bought my second box of Mitchell-Lurie 4-1/2s non worked!. I noticed that the packaging had changed. The individual reed cases of the good ones are little boxes labeled "NOVAPAK".
The new reeds have a slide-in case, the New Revolution Reed Holder. Not that makes any difference to the reed, itself. Its just that the reeds IN the new holders suck.
Yesterday, I was in a music store in another city and was offered a box of Mitchell-Lurie Premium reeds (at a premium price). The box has the Rico name on it. The reeds are very good, and 60% of them are excellent.
Does anyone have any insights to offer? I'd rather play than adjust reeds.
thanks
hen Rico took over Mitchell-Lurie that the 4-1/2s no longer worked well with my set-up --to the point where none in a box were worth

I got some sample Gonzalez reeds. I can't believe how great they are. I don't use Mitchell Lurie anymore, which I used to. This doesn't help your present problem, but might be good to think about in the future.

My fellow Idahoan
Are you sure both boxes are Premiums? I remember a box of 5 for the premium and a box of 10 for the student? Mitchell Lurie reeds.

The Mitchell Lurie Premiums I buy come in boxes of five. They're my favorite reeds for clarinets in Bb and A. I've never seen them sold in boxes of ten, but the packaging on the two types of reeds looks so similar (except for the number of reeds) that more than once, when I've asked for Mitchell Lurie Premiums in a store, the employee has handed me regular Mitchell Luries by mistake. I've also made the mistake of buying those reeds when they were handed to me, even though I know better.
I've never found an entire box of unplayable Mitchell Lurie regulars, but I do occasionally find a mediocre-to-bad regular Mitchell Lurie and I think the premiums really are better reeds. For me they're worth the price difference. I've never found even one unplayable Mitchell Lurie premium. One thing I notice is that the premiums are all speckled cane. I think the preference for speckled cane is more than just a superstition--something different about the growing conditions that produces the speckles also makes the reed play better.

A little off topic...however...I purchased a box of 5 Mitchell Lurie Premiums recently and found that there were only 3 in the box. I took them back to the store and the let me keep them along with another box of 5. Good deal for me.
I like Mitchell Lurie Premiums - haven't found a bad one yet. I recently returned to playing and have tried several brands and settled on Mitchell Lurie Premiums. I think I'll give "Gonzalez" a try too. I'll post my finding later.

The box of Mitchell-Luring Premiums I got this week does contain 5-reeds. The old box (pre Rico labeling) had 10-reeds, and the ones that suck (with the Rico label) has 10.
The Premiums also have the Rico label on the package.
Thanks, for the encouragement. I've had a couple of Gonzales FOF reeds given to me, but they are so hard that I can't work with them. BTW: they're marked 3.5, and I use Mitchell-Lurie 4-1/2s with my mpc.
I still don't understand the Rico reed empire, but its good to know that the M-L Premiums are a low-risk buy.

ML Premiuns are the best. NEVER a problem with them as far as I'm concerned. May want to consult with Tony Pay however.......since he seems to be the guru.....JG
