An excellent exercize is to play long tones starting from your lowest notes up to the highest that you can play.Play and hold them for 20-30 seconds and then take a 30 second "breather" and start the next one.If you start to feel dizzy or start to shake then stop for a couple minutes and then resume. These work wonders for breath control.Later on you can play at differing dynamic levels if you wish. The challenge is to ge as long as you can and the more you work at thses exercizes the longer you will be able to hold your breath. It is very helpful to use a stopwatch or metronome set on like say M=64-82.

Aside from clarinet-specific breathing exercises, I think good general fitness helps. Any aerobic exercise increases cardiovascular capacity. I beat up my knees with too much long distance running and can't do that any more at age 51, but I do walk a great deal, generally more than two miles per day. Among other things, I go grocery shopping on foot about twice a week, at a store that's just about exactly one mile from my house. Carrying home a 15-25 lb. bag of groceries is pretty good upper body exercise. I prefer walking because I can combine exercise with running errands, but skipping rope, swimming, treadmill walking, aerobic dancing and riding a bike would all help with cardiovascular fitness and give a wind player more air.

Find out about Rafael Méndez(world's best trumpet player). I recommend a researarch of his breathing control, if you really want to be successful. His biography is a must. First listen to his old recordings, this could be the beginning of something wonderful.
Check under SUMMIT Records!!!!!
