When do you know enough is enough with a reed? When do you know when to retire it?

Reeds change slowly, and you get used to them. The best test is to put on a new one and notice the difference.

Thought we had settled that question, but when Willis hobbled out in the seventh game against L.A. and sank that first shot you knew that enough was not enough. It was electrifying - greatest sports memory of my life. 1970 finals.

When it stops feeling right and sounding like you want it to, then you should retire it. Forget guidelines on how long they should last--just go by your own intuition. It's your reed, remember, and you should be able to tell when to retire it.

Signs that your reed should be changed

- The color of your mouthpiece and reed is curiously the same.

- After 3 weeks of non-use, it's still wet.

- The green and brown residue on the back has created an airtight seal - making a ligature totally unnecessary.

- Your reed has had more farewell concerts than Barbra Streisand.

- The principal flutist has written "old lead tongue." on all your orchestral parts.

- The back of your reed is inscribed: "Property of Anton Stadler- if found, please return"

- The EPA has roped off the area around your mouthpiece as a high level bio-hazard.

- Those annoying growing roots keep getting tangled in your ligature.

- Brand name: "Reek-O"

It's sort of like a relationship with a girlfriend.....you just know something's not the same.
