Which would you rather have in your bag before a concert: one good reed -- or two good reeds?

Which would you rather have in your life: one wonderful girlfriend (boyfriend) -- or two wonderful girlfriends (boyfriends)?

One good reed is fine but two would be a blessing

As to boyfriends/girlfriends: mind your business!

Two girlfriends at the same time might seem a blessing, but it could get you into a lot of trouble. I suppose the same could be true of two fine reeds. Better to maintain your reeds, and lovers, in rotation.

One good reed. I know this clearly shows I'm a novice. I do have the 4-reed Vandoren plastic case, but it's really for storage. During practice, I sometimes rotate these 4 reeds, but usually play with only one reed. On concert (happen to be this Sunday), I'll bring that one.

One wonderful boyfriend who became my husband. (and I bring THAT one whereever I go).

(p.s. I'm glad I could respond to this post of yours right away. For other posts, I kept them as files in my computer for future studying purpose.)

I tend to rotate my reeds...usually as many as four at a time which work well...however, normally I end up with two very good reeds and certainly have never exceeded five reeds that work well ...

I also find that many reeds that never worked well in the winter suddenly work fine in the summer!!! And man have we been dealing with humidity here!

Reeds - the only problem with one, is that its so close to none.

I read your post, Tony, and find I am at a loss for words. This occurs rarely. I cannot come up with an answer to your conundrum.

As to reeds, who cares. Everybody's got reeds.

As to the other, well...

Reeds: I'll take as many good reeds as I can get. I have 12 in rotation and usually have 3-4 performance ready ones on any given day.

Boyfriends: Never had one, I'm only 17 and I'm not ready to get married, so it's not a huge deal......yet (if I'm 30 and still in the same predicament, that's a different story). But, 1 will most definately be enough for me.

The more reeds (that are good) the better.

If I could choose….just one bad reed and the ATG system will do....
The strange thing is….. I've tried my girlfriend in combination with the ATG system and it really didn’t work at all….

But serious, I've one girlfriend and that's more than enough for me.... besides the costs would be twice that much...[cool]

The interesting thing is they are both highly unpredictable and very demanding of your attention from day to day.

Of course the solution might be to go synthetic...

For my answer to have any meaning, we would have to agree on the definition of "good" as well as the definition of "girlfriend" or "boyfriend." Also, my answer to the reed part of the question depends on how many doubles I'm playing in the concert (assuming, i.e., that I'm playing the concert and not simply attending it). :)

Best regards,

One good man suits me fine, but there's no such thing as too many good reeds. (Besides, nobody makes a storage case for spare men, and they're much too heavy to carry around.)

One good reed, and a Legere back-up.
One good wife (same one I've had for 57years).

The analogy can really only go so far...as best as i can tell, my multiple reeds (unlike multiple girlfriends) have never been jealous of one another. Although if they were, i suppose that could spur competition and each would berform better in that situation than they would if they were the only one. Hmmm...

And Alseg, it's even better if your wife and your mistress are one and the same--that is a true blessing.

Two good reeds. You never know when you might damage your one good one.

Two would seem to be the right number. Unless they are really understanding however, you have to keep them separate. If somehow they manage to get together it's like anti-matter & matter - suddenly you don't have either of them.

I think one is the best answer here. Treat her nicely & she'll treat you as well.

I agree. That way, they will both think you are with the other one, and you can get some practicing in. (A variation on an old joke involving IT guys or engineers).

Girlfriends/boyfriends are like reeds in that you may have to (and should) try out several to find just the right one.

Girlfriends/boyfriends are unlike reeds in that you shouldn't expect that you can work on one to make it perform to your liking.

And, getting full enjoyment out of either one requires just the right embouchure.

"One is the loneliest number". Having two wonderful girlfriends is okay as long as your wife doesnt find out [wink]

I recently purchased a Selmer 10 reed holder, partly to see if they keep the legere reeds in better shape. The reed holder looks kind of like a cigarette holder.
Of course having 10 reeds doesn't correlate with number of girlfriends (i'm married).... but if I can maintain 10 platonic flirtations I think it would help my clarinet playing a great deal.

Depends on what your definition of "has" has in it.

You must not seek to add
To what you have, what you once had;
You have no right to share
What you are with what you were.

No one can have it all,
That is forbidden.
You must learn to choose between.

One happy thing is every happy thing:
Two, is as if they had never been.

Two (or more!) reeds, and one significant other. Your reeds don't have the same jealous feelings as people do, unless the reeds are possessed...and I don't want to think about that, do you?

I'm making my stupid pet human type this. All reeds are possessed. Yes, they're possessed of evil spirits, and so are your screech sticks. You should give the nasty reeds to your nice, helpful cat, who will chew them to shreds. Chewing up the reeds drives out the evil spirits.

Next, you should let the nice cat roll the evil screech-stick down the stairs onto the concrete sidewalk and into the driveway, and then you run your car over the screech stick, back and forth a few times. A pair of humans comes in handy for feeding me and keeping the house clean, but a pair of reeds is an abomination, and if you let those reeds get near a screech-stick, they'll cause nothing but trouble. Trust me on this.

Adivice for Amatures,

ALWAYS rotate your reeds! You should usually rotate your five best. If you have trouble finding five good reeds to play on at one time then try the new Vandoren 56 Rue Lupec. They are superb.

I must answer this. I need two good reeds in my case. The one today squeaked. It was not the one I thought I put on. The one in back of it in the little plastic box was the one that I should have used.

I need one good husband who takes me to where I play and where my reeds shouldn't squeak. No matter what, he always says, "You were wonderful."
