Alright, when my mom was in highschool, she played the clarinet in the school band. At the time (this was probably in the 60s or 70s), they used white clarinets. When my mom was in grade thirteen, they were switching over to black clarinets, and were selling off the old instruments. Since my mom loves the clarinet so much, she decided to buy one.
Now I'm in highschool and playing the clarinet, and my mother has passed on her clarinet to me. Since the instrument is really old, I've had the corks replaced and some keys fixed and it works just like the black clarinet I use at school for concerts and such.
But when I bring in my Clarinet for regular day-to-day lessons, everyone stares at me and thinks it's the coolest thing that I have a white clarinet. Is it really that unusual? Does anyone else out there have one, or is it just me because it was my mom's and that was years ago?
I just thought it was kind of interesting.

HAHA! I just bought one... then I resold it to Sue from the BB. And it had gold keys! I hope she can bring it back to playing condition!
It's prolly a Vito, right? I think it's cool as a novelty, but not as an everyday horn. So you have a reason for ppl to stare at you and think it's cool for a little while. *shrug* Just my opinion.

If it plays well, who cares what color it is?
Could you tell us if it is wood or plastic? If plastic, is it white throughout or painted? Do you happen to know the brand and model?
I may be ignorant, but the only white clarinets that I know of are relatively modern plastic clarinets, the best known being the Vito Dazzler, but I don't believe these were being made in the 60s or 70s. Through a web search I have found that there are other brands of colored clarinets such as Jinyin, Schill, Venus, Cecelio, and College Pro. (I suspect the latter three are just different brands applied to the same clarinet. Jinyin is obviously Chinese and Schill is German.)

I dunno... I'm not embarassed. It's a beautiful clarinet with silver keys and its not cheap looking or anything. I'll see if I can get a picture of it. But it is a vito. I believe it's made out of a really hard plastic, and it doesn't look like it's painted.
I'm thinking of buying a new clarinet from the music store I work at because it's quite annoying to practice on one clarinet and half to switch for concerts. They sell windsons there... I've never played one. Does anyone know if they make good clarinets?

most likely it is like the one I sold Sue, a Clari-tone, which were made in the 60s and 70s. Clari-tone was also made in black. I think the just switched their name later to Dazzler.
Windsor=crap lol
If you are going to spend your money getting a better clarinet, start out a Selmer Omega, Noblet or Buffet E11. At least get a name brand wooden clarinet. You can get them for a couple hundred dollars and they are good instruments.

Thanks for the advice.
I'm only saying windson because those are the kind that the music store sells, and they aren't incrediably expensive (I'm only a highschool mind you, and am practically broke- even with a job). But I'll see which kind the school uses (I'm pretty sure those ones ARE wood, though I could be wrong), and possibly I can buy through the school or get the music store to order one.

The brand name of those particular colored clarinets is "Conductor".
They are available in red, white, blue, green, yellow and black.
I fear that their quality may be a bit disappointing... GBK

I bought contragirl's white Vito cuz I saw it on ebay and immediately
knew it must be hers, since she had mentioned it here on
the BB. I really don't NEED a white clarinet with gold keys, but
I thought it would be cool to buy something from contragirl,
because she is so goofy. And besides, she loves cheese. ![[happy]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smiley12.gif)
But anyway.
It doesn't play right now since there is a pad missing
in the upper joint. Plus I have to put new tenon corks on it.
At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to bother fixing it, but my
kids really think it is something. And I do like Vitos for jazz,
since they have a fairly large bore and a nice big sound. I might
just use it next time I have a gig with my friends Joe and Dick,
who are the other two members of our little Swing Trio,
Mood Swing.
I don't think I will use it in concert band or orchestra though.
But contragirl, if you still want to carry it down the aisle
with you at your wedding someday, let me know. Maybe
I'll even give it to you as a wedding gift.

Oh man Sue! You are gonna have to send me a picture when you get that thing all fixed up! I'm looking forward to seeing how it will turn out.
I sold it to Sue cuz I knew I couldn't be experimental enough to try to fix it myself. lol. Plus I didn't have the $$ to get a pro to fix it for me.
But I think it's pimpin with the gold keys. So if I do get married and I need a white clarinet, maybe I will rent it from you. Then maybe you will make some money back for it!
You can be the next John Lennon.. but on clarinet. Just play <i>Imagine</i> and I will come video tape you playing, and stand in the background (I'll be Yoko).
Maybe I will find myself another white clarinet when I have the $$ to buy it and fix it (hopefully it will be in better shape than the one I had bought on ebay and resold)
