Yes, I really did look at the places where we are supposed to look for ages of instruments. This Yamaha belongs to my 85 year old student. It plays like a dream. On the Yamaha it has the following:
YCL61
Nippon Gakki
Japan
And the serial number is 001234.
My student thinks this horn is not worth anything. But the way it plays, wow! And the odd serial number...
Any ideas?
Thanks, Carol

1972 - 1978. And if it's been looked after, it could be a nice one. The 61 was the forerunner to the YCL-62, which has just been superceded by the YCL-650. It's described variously as professional or entry-level professional (not meaning lesser quality, but just without the "bells and whistles").
It was a bit before my serious interest began, but I'm told the Yamaha line then was as good as it is now. On the matter of the number, you're just lucky Someone had to have it! I think it was John Kelly who said in a posting that Yamaha numbers and exact years of manufacture are the best-kept secret in the world.
