Larry Combs set-up (his barrel actually)

Hey guys! I looked through the search engine and I couldn't find the answer.

My band teacher was at the BOA Summer Symposium and she was telling me how the Principal Clarinet player of the Chicago Symphony (which is Larry Combs if I remember) played on many models of clarinets and he turned around so the teachers couldn't see which one he was playing. After he was done playing all of them, he revealed which clarinet was which model so the teachers could hear which one they liked better-not just which one they like because of reputation. Well, my teacher ended up liking the R13 the best.

She said though that Larry was using a certain barrel on each of the clarinets and that it improved the tone and intonation of each horn. I'm interested in which barrel he was using. My teacher said that he told them and it was something like Zeller, Yeller... something like that. Although, you have to understand that my teacher doesn't have a grand memory. I looked up Zeller and Yeller and couldn't find anything. Anyone know what barrel he is using?

Thanks!

Well, Mr. Combs is such a wonderful player for sure. He is making his sound from his brain and embouchure, so he can make that sound on any insturment. Maybe comfort is different matter, thought. One of my teacher, who studied with Mr. Combs, says this kind of things......

At lessons with my current teacher, we have not talked about equipment so far........

Larry used a Eddie Daniels MP barrel made by Accubore on his Leblanc Opus when I was his student a few years back. All the photos that I have seen of him since shows him using the same barrel.

Larry would sound better than most on anything he chose to play. In my lessons he always sounded amazing. It seemed effortless for him. Simply an amazing musician.

Dave, you studied with Lary Combs? cool. I would love to move up to chicago and study with him. Doesn't he teach at a music school of some sort, or does he just do freelance teaching?

Hmm... I'm looking for a mp and barrel and my teacher was raving about Larry's barrel. Maybe she has bad memory or something!
