Hello All,
What does it mean when you get a Bb Clarinet mpc that says it is 442?
Do you need a shorter barrel or longer?
Thanks,

It means the mouthpiece maker had the audacity to believe that his mouthpiece is intended to be played at the "European" pitch level of A-442; whereas American groups more typically play around A-440. Unless the mouthpiece is radically different than 'standard' ones, it (by itself) should have very little effect on the overall pitch of the clarinet + barrel + mouthpiece system. Don't sweat it. If it plays well, your current barrel should be fine.

Hello,
I do quite a lot of business in Spain, and they can definitely tell the difference between my 440 and 442 pitch mouthpieces. All I've done is to make the mouthpiece 2 mm shorter (by removing material from the bottom of the tenon and the bottom of the body of the mp). I actually played my 440 clarinet (Selmer Recital) with a 2 mm shorter barrel and a 442 mouthpiece in Spain last Christmas (soloed [Weber Concertino and Immer Kleiner] with a very good concert band and was still pretty flat compared to their 442 instruments. I had to continually ask that they retune in rehearsal a little flatter. With my non-existent Spanish, it was hard, but a lot of fun nonetheless.
After that tangent, play your new mouthpiece with a tuner. How does it play? Don't worry about what it says on the outside or on the box it came in!
