Computer guru Kim Kommando pointed out this site to her newsletter subscribers:
http://www.musipedia.org/
It allows you to pick out a tune on an on-screen keyboard, or whistle it into your computer microphone; and its supposed to identify the tune.
I tried it, and it doesn't seem to work very well.
Part of the problem seemed to be that the tunes I wanted to test are not in the site's database; so I thought I'd add the von Weber Grand Duo Concertant. To do that, one registers with the site and transcribes the music using a version of Lilipond.
Unfortunately, the keyhboard for the Lilipond point/click input does not have the required range.
Anyhow, you might find the site and its recognition technique interesting.
