 My First Audition
Author: ashadazle

Okay Guys,

In two months I'll be going on my very first audition. It's for a youth orchestra at a local music school. Competition is steep. I have so many questions. First of all, I don't want to look like a total idiot if they ask me the name of my composer (Nikolai Rimsky Korsakow) so can anybody try to write how to pronounce this name?

Secondly one of the requirements is to be able to play major scales ( up to 4 #s and b's) and melodic minors. Both have to be played up and down. That's all they say. The problem is that I don't know whether I should like hold the top note, take a breath, then go back down or just hit the top note then immediately go down.

My third problem is with my music itself. There are what look to be staccatos over a group of notes, but the notes are slurred. How's this possible?

Last but not least. There's a part in the song that would sound great slowed down but my music does not say to do so. On the recording it actually is slowed down. The judges won't have a copy of my music. Is it like a big no no to change the music for the purpose of

Oh yeah. I know I need a private teacher but it's kinda not an option for another month or so and I need answers now.

Thanks people. This, I know, is a long one.

It's a bit like this: nickle-eye rim-ski core-suh-kov

As for the scales, if they don't specify, just play them how you're comfortable. With scales, it's most important to play them evenly. That is, don't speed up and slow down if it gets easier or harder.

The staccato-slur thing is something like super legato. Just barely separate the notes so it almost sounds like one continuous slur.

As for your last question, it's music. Music is interpretation. As long as you don't go too far away from the music (like adding extra notes or taking out ones you just don't like), it's OK. Good luck.

Andy's answers are all right on.
Might say core-suh-cough.

HI, I have an audition coming up in about a month and a half, and the requirements are like that same but except for the minor scales and things like that but yeah like the previous post it is dead on but I have something to add to the last statement about your music being out of context you know it is not all that bad to take it out of context but just as long as you don't play wrong notes or things like that, but my piece of music that I am playing is called Concertino by Weber a very famous piece, and my teacher tells me like in this triplet part that to pause for like a second and then continue, I have heard the recording of the piece and she dose the same thing you know but don't take it completly out of context but adding is not bad but taking away from the music is bad, add feelings and things like that make dynamics dramatic you know make the judges know that you know how to play dynamics you know, but scale wise too if you slur a scale my teacher tells me that to connect the notes even the top notes you know but ask somebody or something like that but both of our information is being handed down to you from the professional's we take lessons from so take the information in and you will make the spot. GOOD LUCK

wow that was a long sentence. good luck to the both of you. Can't say I'm a fan of the Korsakov (if it's the concerto you're going to be playing) but good luck by the by.
