 Sucking my finger
Author: Tony Pay 2017
Date:   2005-07-09 21:17

I recently cut my finger, and I'm worried about how I should suck it -- with my eyes open, or with my eyes shut?

Sucking seems to hurt less if I keep my eyes shut, but I don't know whether I'm imagining this. I know that some people say that it definitely hurts less with your eyes shut, but others say that this is nonsense, and it hurts just the same whether your eyes are open or shut.

How do I know whether I'm fooling myself? Do people find that it hurts more if they suck *too hard* with their eyes open? Is sucking with eyes shut automatically more gentle?

I also wonder whether I'm actually feeling the *right sort of pain* when I have my eyes open. If I keep my eyes shut, can I assume that the pain is automatically OK?

Of course, I could try to work this out myself, or go to a doctor -- if I can find one that I can trust -- but how would I know that? Is just *any* doctor qualified to give me sucking lessons, if it turns out that I need them? And are there specialists in both techniques?

I could see a psychiatrist, even; but I think that the best thing is to ask the experts on this list what I should do. I'm sure that someone here can tell me what's *really* going on with my sucking.

Tony

What are you talking about? Why could you suck your finger if you got a cut? It's called a Band-Aid. You can still play with a Band-Aid on your finger...

You only feel pain because you think it is there.
If your finger hurt twice as worse but you didnt see a cut you would never notice.

Calling Dr. Freud. Hopefully your finger is just a finger.

Forget about sucking your finger completely! What you should do is take your finger and stick it in your armpit, then, squeeze it in there as hard as possible. Next, with your other finger, yeah, the one that isn't cut, stick it either in an electric socket, or under boling water. This will also help you in transcribing any Eric Dolphy Solo you are having trouble with.

The Scratch
by Brod Bagert

I was running and I fell
And I hurt my knee
And I got a bad scratch
And I want you to see.

What's that? You can't find it?
But it's got to be there.
It hurts me so bad,
Please search everywhere.

If you don't ever find it,
Think what I'll miss:
No place for a Band-Aid,
No place for a kiss.

This poem is from my 5-year-old's favorite poetry book "Giant Children".

I think he applied the Crazy Glue, but he left the glue part out and just applied the crazy!

Well, Doctor, I would say that this is a case where the off-label use of the product is probably more fun.

Well,

My violist thinks that my clarinet sucks --even when I blow it sweetly.

There is an old US Marine saying that provides an operational definition of compromise: Try closing only one eye!

Tony didn't say anything about *sniffing* his cut. He asked what's *really* going on with his *sucking*?

Best regards,

Obviously no one can tell you the right way to suck your finger. Whatever works best for you is the answer. [happy]

Just close your eyes and think of your worst concert..... It will be so irritating, that you will forget the pain.

For a more aesthetic (anesthetic?) experiance, try keeping you eyes open, but flatten your chin and use a double lip suck embouchure. At the very least, it may darken your pain a bit.................

After thinking about it, I believe that what's happening when you are sucking is that you are applying pressure to the wound with your tongue. This is probably best done consciously (eyes open) though unconscious support is also possible (eyes closed). The risk of conscious (eyes open) support is that you may apply too much of it, creating pain that can be mistaken for the pain of the cut. Actually, however, if you are sensitive to the level of pain, it can actually serve as a feedback mechanism such that, when the pain increases, you should react to the signal by reducing the pressure somewhat. Unconscious (eyes closed) support is, of course, uncontrollable.

You might try applying both simultaneously, either by blinking or perhaps by keeping one eye open and the other shut (this latter approach, however, may simply result in somewhat diminished conscious control). I believe that the result of the simultaneous approach may be a diminuendo effect -- particularly appropriate as the bleeding diminishes.

Best regards,
jnk

When you suck your finger, is your fingernail face down, or is it face up, in the Italian manner?

The approach used by a clarinetist to suck a cut finger would of course depend on whether he plays single- or double-lip.
