Larry... Thanks for the correction. The Rachmaninov was the only one I wasn't 100% certain about.

I was doing them from memory and thought the Rachmaninov also used bass at some point....GBK

Walton - Belshazzar's Feast
Clarinet 1 (Bb, Eb)
Clarinet 2 (Bb)
Clarinet 3 (Bb and Bass Clarinet)

Not sure if I'm interpreting this mini score correctly or not, but its saying:
Clarinet I in Bb
Clarinet in Eb, doubling
Clarinet II in Bb
Bass Clarinet, doubling
Clarinet III in Bb

That's exactly what it says on the instrumentation, and then on page 28 (of a 165 page score) in the gap between the Clarinet I and II line it says [Clar. II muta in Clar. in Eb].

In the Clarinet 3 part, if Mahler just indicates "in A" or "in B", is it assumed soprano clarinet? Otherwise he would indicate "bass clarinet in A" or "B", correct? Thanks!

I've just played Mahler 5 and there were no parts for C clarinet. Also the D clarinet was in the 2nd clarinet part. Maybe there are different editions/versions of this symphony?

The CD-ROM parts I have are for 3 clarinets (as indicated by GBK above). The D clarinet part is in the Clarinet 3 part and there are four lines for C clarinet at the beginning of the second movement. Did you only use 2 clarinets Liquorice?

Does anyone know many and what clarinets are in the scoring for Berlioz Symphonie Funèbre et Triomphale? I saw it at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall with an expanded RLPO in the 1960's and there seemed to be a lot. First time I heard an Eb I think. Thanks, Malcolm

Four clarinets:

Clarinet 1: Bb
Clarinet 2: Bb
Eb Clarinet
Bass Clarinet (Bb)

Best regards,

Thanks for the info jnk.
What orchestral scoring involves ALTO Eb clarinets? These seem to be very common on ebay these days but are they just for wind band and jazz? I keep getting tempted to bid for one but am not sure what use it would be!
Thanks,
Malcolm
