 Bass Clarinet

I bought some weeks ago a used Kohlert Bass Clarinet, which is on the way to me. I also (from a different source) bought a Selmer Bass moutchpiece. I had already bought some reeds. When trying to mount the reeds, the reeds are far to small for the mouthpiece. I am wondering if I by any mistake have got a contra bass mouthpiece?

The mouthpiece is 11.5 cm / 0.45" long

Can anyone help me?

I have been playing saxophone for quite sone years, and a baritone reed almost seems to fit

Kind regards

Meyer

Are you sure you didn't buy a contra bass or contra alto clarinet mouthpiece by mistake? You'll know soon enough when the bass clarinet arrives (a contra bass or contra alto mouthpiece would be too big to fit a bass clarinet).

The seller sold it as a selmer bass clarinet mouthpiece, and just looking at photo, then it is difficult to evaluate the size.

It is most likely too big

Kind regards

If one of your tenor sax reeds fits your new mouthpiece, it is a bass clarinet model. Bass clarinet and tenor sax reeds are interchangable in size.

Well Meyer, if you say your baritone sax reed almost fits, then I am pretty sure you got yourself a Selmer mouthpiece for the Eb contrabass clarinet (aka contra alto clarinet)

Does the baritone sax reed covers at least all of the tip opening? It may not cover from rail to rail, but as long as the width of the reed's tip fully covers the tip opening of the mouthpiece, it's considered a match.

Another test is what William suggested, if your tenox sax reeds doesn't fully cover the tip opening of this mouthpiece, then you definitely do not have a bass clarinet mouthpiece.

I can take the measurement of my Selmer C contra mouthpiece and compare to yours, then we will know for sure.

Hi Bassethorn,

A bartine saxophone reed almost covers the tip, and it does not cover from rail to rail. The diameter of the shank is 1.26" and the total length is 4.5"

A tenor saxophone reed as far too small, so I suppose that I got an Eb contra bass clarinet mouthpiece

Kind regards

Meyer, Do the GRAND thing. There is a Eb Contra Alto on the dreaded auction site. Go for broke and get it to fit your mouthpiece.
