 Tuba Solos with Band?
Author: Don Berger
Date:   2000-03-10 16:28

Our community band is now blessed by having a fine tuba player [I cooperate with him via bass cl!], and I have been asked to look for solo pieces for him with not-too-difficult parts for our 60 piece band. All sugestions greatly appreciated. Don

I RECOMEND "TAPESTRY FOR TUBA" BY MICHAEL BRAND - G&M BRAND PUBLICATIONS, ENGLAND.
VERY NICE PIECE. NOT MUCH WORK FOR THE ORCHESTRA

How about Touch of Tuba? Sorry I can't remember who wrote it, but the community band I play in worked on it last summer for a concert. Nice little piece, not too difficult.

Well, this isnt' really a solo per se, but in Holst's 2nd Suite, in the 4th movement, near the end, there's this really cool piccolo/tuba duet (and yes, it's as funny as it sounds :). I would only recommend it if you're band is advanced, though, the second suite is a bit more challenging than the first.

Many thanx, responders, will look them up. I copied off the Southern Music tuba lists, I'm sure other publishers will have novelty?? pieces as well as true concertos for this good low bass!! Don

We did one called Tuba Smarties written by Herbie Flowers. It's a cute little piece which we have used as a comedy number in contests. The arrangement we had was for Brass Band but I am sure there would be a wind arrangement available.

Yup... I remember the once where in an orchestra I was playing with, the piccolo really sucked... not to be too rude, but I've heard much better. Well Apprently the director thought this also... so in "Stars and Stripes Forever" He played the Piccolo solo! Now this was an interesting one! But it worked to my surprise!!! Give it a whirl if your tuba player can take it!

The Concord Band (in MA) played a concert this month with a guest tuba soloist, Ken Amis of the Empire Brass Band. Ken played Dedrich's Touch of Tuba and Gregson's Tuba Concerto. Both pieces were crowd pleasers and the band parts were not-too-difficult.

Don,

Our County Concert Band which also has about sixty players did a piece called SCHERZO POMPOSO by someone called Walters which was good, the other parts were reasonably interesting but not too difficult (For clarinets it was one of the easier pieces in the program!)

Hope that helps,

Chloe

There's one called "Tubby the Tuba" that's fun if you can find the music. I don't remember who wrote it.
