Hello all,
I am about to purchase some CDs of bass clarinet concertos: by Erdman, Westlake, and Heucke.
Has anyone listened to them or is familiar with them? I would appreciate some comments about their styles, etc, so I know what I can expect.
Thanks.
Willy

Actually, the Erdman concerto is recorded by Renate Rusche. The Westlake by Westlake himself, and the Heucke by Henri Bok.
The Westlake and Heucke recordings are available on the Euravent site: www.euravent.co.uk. In the bass clarinet section.
The Erdman CD can be ordered from Amazon I believe.

BTW, The BASSics CD by Henri Bok is all bass clarinet and piano music, no concertos.

I have the recording of the Erdman. It's hard (for me) to describe. It is virtuosic, modern but not aggressively so. It uses the full range of the instrument. The only extended technique, however, appears to be some slap tonguing at the end. I would classify it as generally tonal. FWIW, I like it alot (enough that I went out and purchased the piano reduction). Actually, I like the entire CD. Renate Rusche can flat out play.
Best regards,
jnk
