In the Mozart A-Major Clarinet Quintet, several passages begin with the notes marked with staccatto dots. In the second measure of the passages, the dots go away.
Should the entire passage be played staccatto, or should they be played smoothly after the first few notes?
thanks

Thank you, Tony. I'm so pleased to have you take an interest here, because I spent my week end with your paper on phrasing; and that caused me to put the K 581 on my music stand.
I have the Music Minus One Version, with rehearsal numbers, so I'll count measures.
At measure 19, after the first repeated section in the first Allegro movement, the first violin plays a sequence of slured 1/16 notes, and, in meaure 20, the clarinet plays a progression of arpeggios. The first measure is marked forte, with staccato 1/8th notes. The next 11 measures continue arpeggi in 1/8 notes with no articulation markings. I'm wondering if those 1/8th notes should continue to be played staccato.
Thanks

Well, two things about that:
The first thing is that the staccato marks and the dynamic are both editorial. So there is no *textual* reason to obey them.
The second thing is that there is no *musical* reason to obey them. The passage has a unity that would be compromised by any such change.
The combination of these two things means for me that you shouldn't take this difference seriously.
However, if you've read my 'phrasing' article, you'll know that I think that there *is* a significant change between the first bar after the repeat sign and the second bar after the repeat sign. Here the textual evidence, though slight (we don't have the manuscript) fits the musical evidence.
So I would want to take *that* difference seriously.
Tony
