Oil them when they start binding. Don't get oil on the wood. Use key oil, not the 3 in 1 you get at the hardware store as it gums up.

Mr. Brannen in Chicago (who overhauled my R-13 a few years ago) told me to use motor oil---30 weight.

When I was a kid I read I should use light oil (like fishing tackel oil).

I am confused. What is the proper way to apply the oi?
Any pointers?

I'd use the experience of Bill Brannen personally!

I'd like to add NEVER use 3 in one oil on ANYTHING,as it gums up.

Personally, I oil my own horn's key pivot points [sparingly] about once a year, or when they indicate any "sluggish" action, and make it a part of any minor repair work on student cls. That seems to be sufficient to prevent rusting-in of rods and screws, which, when found such as on EBAY-purchased horns, is a real overhaul nightmare!! I like to use key oil with a major cl maker's name on it, with up to about 10% of a high-detergent motor oil such as 10W30 or 40. My good-friend, pro-repairman uses a fine wire to dip in the oil bottle, picking up a very small drop and applying it to the pivot point thus preventing over-oiling. We have discussed this before, so try searching the Phorum. Don

Bob --
Don Berger makes a most important point on this subject --that oil should be applied sparingly.

As you can see, there is no consensus as to the best oil to use. IMHO, most of the complaints about "gumming up" are due to overoiling of a dirty mechanism, regardless of the type or viscosity of the oil used. If the mechanism is built up with bits of dirt, dust, sweat, mung etc. to begin with (as it often is), it should be cleaned before oil is applied (sparingly).

Well, my vote is with Don. 35 years playing experience has me oiling, sparingly, twice a year with a tube and rod cleaning once a year. I use high quality medium key oil mixed 10:1 with 5/20 or 5/30 detergent motor oil. -ss-

Excuse my ignorance, but what does the motor oil do that the key oil doesn't?

B J - To me its a matter of "staying ability", firstly, it increases the viscosity [and lubricity] of the very light commercial "key oil" and secondly decreases its vapor pressure so that it doesnt evaporate away as rapidly. I dont like "straight" heavy oils, believing, with the service conditions not at all severe, that we shouldn't slow-down key action unnecessarily. Just my own take, however I did work in the lube oil business a long time ago!. Don
