I am using a Chromatic tuner. I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but when I try to tune, all of my notes are off by one step. Is it me or the tuner or the clarinet ??

Thanks :)
Tish

The tuner displays pitches in 'concert' pitch (key of C) whereas your clarinet is what's known as a 'transposing instrument', pitched in the key of Bb (one whole step lower than concert pitch). So if you finger the clarinet note C, the tuner will show it as Bb.

It's not you, the tuner, or the clarinet............it's those **&%^#&*%#@ reeds!

that is exactly what was happening. A C is showing as a Bb. So I know I am in tune if I am showing one step lower on the tuner?

Thanks :)

If the displayed pitch is indeed one whole step lower than what you 'think' you're playing, and the tuner needle is centered (and/or the green light is on), you're in tune! At least, for that one instant. As has been mentioned before, intonation is a constant process of hearing and adjusting to the players around you, all the time. The tuner is just a starting point.

put another way, you're in tune with the tuner - as for anyone else, who knows...

Hey, you can have some real fun with a tuner if you use the Smartmusic.com program for it. It can sound the pitch that you are playing as well as tell you (AT THE SAME TIME!) what your own pitch is.

No other tuner can do that as they are either play a pitch or hear a pitch not both at the same time.

As tuning should always be "aural not visual" it's a great way to train doing that while being able to check yourself if you are not sure where you are.

If you have a private teacher and they use the program, you can get a (1 year?) $20 subscription which usually costs $10 a month for the year. It's worth the $10 a month, but at $20 it's basically a steal for the 1st year.

Worth a look
