Has anyone used the claripatch and can you give comments on it? Does it affect sound at all? and how effective is it in doing what the site says it does?

Description, please . If it's a mp "beak" rubber/plastic patch, many of us use the commercially available ones, and do some D I Y experimentation, such as [I] use some ?special? white [hospital] elastic tape, about 1/2 mm thick , just as good as store-boughts. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I have a claripatch out back next to the cucumbers. The rabbits keep eatin em.

No...they are shims you put on the facing to change reed characteristics.

Y-not just adjust the reed?

They look a lot like gap feelers made into shims. Fugitives from the AutoZone. (car parts store for those of u from Oz)

I just read through all the info on the claripatch site (could they really not think of a better name?!?!?). If I thought it could work then I would buy it today. But I simply can't see how it would do anything except collect spit and produce bubbles. Are there any physicists on the site who could hazard a guess about how this bizarre contraption might function?

You don't need to be a physicist ...

It's basically a replaceable table on your mouthpiece; it adheres to the existing mouthpiece table and presents a new curve to the reed.

It works. Whether or not it serves your needs is a different question.

If you mean the ones that go on the surface of your mouthpiece then the pourpose of those patches are to protcect your mouthpiece from teeth marks but that is not it, it is also is there to make the resination in the mouthpiece dampend alittle but wich all clarinet players know that when you put this patch on the mouthpiece the resination in your head from the mouthpiece is eliminated wich helps you hear your sound alittle better. Like an example is when your teeth rattle the resination is going to your head and then when the patch is on you teeth dose not rattle anymore so that way you can hear your sound a lot better I started playing with one just friday and I love the sound. so yeah they are worth it.

I've got the claripatch. It does exactly what it says it does, by effectively changing the shape of your mouthpiece facing. You choose the patch that you need to fit the reed that you are playing. I found it useful for blowing in new reeds which are initially too hard, for emergencies when your reeds have all gone too hard or too soft, and for those "in between" periods when your new reeds aren't ready and your old reeds are dying!

Unfortunately I do find that it somehow "deadens" the sound, so for me it's only a 2nd last resort. (Last resort is playing with a Legere plastic reed!)

From the claripatch.com site, I saw the price was US$149 a set. How many are there in a set?

There is the "student" set which has something like 4 of them for about $60

Tempting!

I just tried a couple different patches on my setup. I liked it. I don't think it does as good a job as getting the "right" mouthpiece, but it offers amazing flexibility. I think of it as tool that can adapt the mouthpiece to the reed in a consistent manner. The user's manual is very clear.

I am almost certain I will buy it. I might not use it every day, but it is very likely to be more useful than the 15 different ligatures that are sitting in my case. Is any of the mouthpiece refacer using it to interactively help a player and his setup?

I imagine my self going to get my mouthpiece refaced the same way I get new lenses for my glasses.
Refacer: Let me put on this claripatch: "Is it better or worse?"
Me: Worse. Way too bright.
R: Ok now how about with this one.
M: Ohh much better, articulation is a little dead.
R: I think I have the right one. try it.
M: This feels great!
R: Ok, I have all the table measurements come back tomorrow, it'll be ready

Ok, I must stop dreaming...
