 Bore oils - interesting link

Some of you may find this interesting. A rather more scientific explanation than we're used to on how and why bore oils work.

(Disclaimer - I sell a plant derived oil mixture for oiling wood)
A few points of controversy from my experimentation and chemistry background (e.g. vitamin E is a poor long term antioxidant for vegetable oils - better ones available) but overall a pretty informative article. The analogies with recorder wood do not always hold with grenadilla but the main scientific facts about using plant derived oils for oiling the wood and protecting against moisture imbalances is paramount. Other plant derived oils not mentioned have more suitable and unique properties in an oiling formulation.

P.S. Interesting analytical confirmation that a major instrument manufacturer's aftermarket bore oil is indeed mineral oil - aka baby oil sold at an absurdly inflated price. Caveat emptor - if it is clear and colorless it is 99% sure it is baby oil.

OK.
So shall we also apply Desitin(R) to our babies?

Granted, the article is a "snoozer" to most folks except avid chemists but there are some take home salient points about using plant derived oils on wooden instruments. It has been too many years since my own babies and diaper rash so the reference to Desitin(R) (which is now fortified with Aloe and Vitamin E) went over my head - we actually used some hippie weird Scandinavian whale oil (not avaiable anymore) goop fortified with cod liver oil on the bare bottoms to good reward.

stevensfo,

Thanks for the interesting link. IMO, most of us would be unable to distinguish a less-than-good grade of baby oil from a good one. Hopefully bore oil suppliers perform this service for us.

Regards,
Hans

OF course. Just like Coca Cola makes you healthy, politicians tell us the truth and there are WMD in Iraq.

As for baby oil, well, I use the Doc's Bore oil. Any left after oiling my clarinet goes straight on the baby's bottom. So far I've seen no cracks and the baby makes a really great sound!

Steve

PS Don't ask me what I use the clarinet swab for!

:-)

Thanks, stevensfo, for the fascinating article. Some very interesting paragraphs towards the end, for even for those who got lost in the chemistry.
