 White/colored mouthpieces?
Author: contragirl
Date:   2005-06-19 08:04

I recently acquired a ivory white Goldentone mouthpiece. I'm wondering, why did they make white and colored mouthpieces as opposed to the normal black mpcs? Were they trying to be cool? And what is it made of? A resonite material?

Also, what does anyone think of the Vandoren 2 tones? I had a friend that kind liked them, but I wonder how they compare to the normal Vandoren mpcs.

Don't know about the Goldentone but white mouthpieces were once "the rage". Some were probably made from celluloid and before that ivory....others from who knows what. The vd "swirl" two tone was originally used for bowling balls.....to utilize scrap red and black phenolic. Those mps today are great for use by polka groups at bowling parties.
Must admit I don't know, technically ,what Resonite is.

Bob, as far as I know, resonite is hard rubber, and a lot of mpcs are made of this.

Contragirl, the Goldentone mpcs I have seen are inexpensive and made of plastic.

As best I recall, the white [yellow etc] mps were made by Brilhart, dating from the 1940's I believe, when not many differing "plastics" were available. Hardened rubber dates back to Goodyear's Vulcanite, phenolics to Baekland's Bakelite, 'nylons' to Carothers research, the acrylates, [my choice for the ----tone mps is poly methylmethacrylate of the late 1930's-60's DuPont research, rather than the earlier cellulose[oid] nitrate, highly flammable !!]. I agree that the "showy" appearance of a mp, less breakable than O'Brien's glass-crystal, partic. for jazz playing, is the reason for their popularity back then [and ?now?]. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

contragirl,
I have a vandoren 5 RV two-tone. It was simply a colour choice.
It doesn't make it play any differently but makes it easy to find it in a box of black mouthpieces I suppose.
I have a white one, at least 40 years old, of unknown brand as well but it is of poor design and it is only used to occupy space in a drawer.
Regards,
Hans

In the 1950's I used a Brilhart Personaline Tonalin (off-white) mouthpiece. It played well, but I really chose it for the "cool" factor.

I've had a Brillhart 5* or two in my quiver for years. They've got a white patch where your upper teeth/lip sits. My newest for tenor sax looks just like the 1960's version.

I had an ivory colored Runyon symphonic. It looked like a good quality material but the facing was way to small for me. There was a large selection of facings available to choose from, I picked the wrong one.
I also have $5 blank one that looks like cheap plastic that plays suprisingly decent but has little tone.

Resonite is not hard rubber.
Resonite is some blend of plastics and rubber like materials. It does not turn turn yellow or green with age like hard rubber, though it does fade a little with age.

On the shelf in my studio I had a white Brilhart Tonalin alto sax mouthpiece (complete w/serial number). This is very similar to the white Tonalin Streamline mouthpiece that Charlie Parker used.

When I use it, I still can't play Anthropology at mm=300 [wink] ...GBK

GBK,
Re: "I still can't play Anthropology at mm=300"... perhaps you could if you had a white plastic sax (a la the "World's Greatest Jazz Concert") to go with the mouthpiece?

Hans

I really enjoy playing my Brihlhart Tonalin clarinet mouthpieces on vintage instruments such as the older Selmer CT's and Conn 444/424 instruments. I have two of them (3* and 4). Both of them are excellent performers on these wide bore instruments.

For that "brighter" sound.................(?)

Ok--sorry. Just attempting some morning humor.

When I was in jr. high and high schools, the white plastic mouthpieces were considered (by us teenaged 'experts') to be junk and suitable only for marching band. If a player was seen playing on one in concert band he/she was considered to be a neophyte of the worst sort.
Just a bit of nostalgia from a Clarinet/Sax Geezer (C/S-G).

Dave S- in deference to a good[ly] number of us OLD Cl/S G[eezers, I suggest you add "young" [or other term] to this [slightly-deragatory] appellation. Some of us like/dislike such publicity. Our band's #1 Alto Sax player/announcer called me up to the front at our recent, out-of-doors concert, for a "who are you" quiz, which, hooked up to my bass cl, trying to get up the next selection in the breeze, I sure did not appreciate, even tho being [perhaps] the oldest musician in our band. I didnt know whether to brag or apologize, hope what I said made some sense. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Don,
You're only as young/old as you feel --- unless you play bass clarinet, in which case the aging process is 'grandfathered' and you receive an exemption/waiver which allows you to remain young forever.....

lol! That will be so hott! (Has to have 2 t's)

I have the ivory Selmer goldentone, and it looked weird on the white clarinet. I bet a clear mpc would look awesome too.

At one point, I had a Tonalin, but it was all black, didn't even have the white patch on it. I wound up reselling it cuz it didn't play too well for me. :P

I hope you like the white Vito when I send it! I had it sitting on my dining room table, so whenever ppl would come over, they would say it looked cool. lol.

The above exchange between susieray and contragirl reminds me of comedian Billy Crystal's old line: "It's better to LOOK mahvelous than to BE mahvelous".

Speaking of appearance, my clay-red Henton semi-metal mouthpiece looks very nice on any grenadilla clarinet.
