For quite a few years I've associated Noblet Bb bores with .584. Think, then, of my amazement when my repair tech measured my 1964 Noblet (bottom of the upper joint) and found that it was .600. He showed me his measuring device and I saw the reading with my own eyes. I'm still scratching my head over this. Anyone have some insights or comments?

Prob. not "wore out", Bob D, I dont believe in the "blown-out" theory. Perhaps the bore is varied due to wood shrinkage/expansion etc, the top tenon ring, or "egging" like my Stubbins Model, "Made in France by Noblet" ser. #324xx, exhibits. Per my caliper measurements, the U J is cylindrical at 14.76 to 14.82 mm [avg. 14.80 = .5827", {div. by 25.4 mm/"}]. Is it possible that an unskilled previous owner [or an observant tech., tweaking to tune the cl {12ths}], may have enlarged the lower UJ tenon, a simple task with fingered-pressure sandpaper on your Nob ?? Re: my Stubbins Nob, W S has a great amount of detail to discuss in his book, but its having no index, a great deal of reading is required !! Other thots and comments? Don

Don: By "wore out" I meant enlarged due to use over many years. Blown Out is a whole different subject and I'm undecided about it yet.

I acquired the clarinet from a family friend a couple of years ago. She was the original owner. Her parents bought her the clarinet brand new in 1964 when she was in elementary school. She played it a year or so and then gave up the clarinet. It stayed in a closet for close to 40 years until I received it and had it restored. It has a lovely dark, fat sound and decent intonation. If the bore had, indeed, become mis-shapen from so many years of unuse I'd think that the clarinet's intonation would be thrown out of wack.
I've had several good repair techs work on this clarinet and they did not report anything problematic about it. They are of an opinion that it's in very good playing condition.

......and by "worn out" I didn't mean defective. Guess I should have said "worn oversize"...but now with add'l. info. that evidently is incorrect.

Dear Roger: In the metric system my two year old "flagship" Vito V40, which was just discontinued to be replaced by the small bore model, measured exactly 15mm as Pete Fountain's clarinet does. That is over .590 inches. It is no peashooter he said. Ken
