Practical to buy reeds in bulk?
Author: Kanehira
Date:   2005-06-15 23:54

I play on V12 size 3.5 reeds: at the local music store, they are selling these for $22.50. However, at some online dealers, they are offering them for $17.49 and free shipping. If I get free shipping, I am considering buying two or more boxes at the same time. I just moved up a reed strength to where I am now, less than two months ago. Do you think it's practical to buy the boxes in bulk if there is a chance I will move up in strengths again? (How big is that chance? I moved up from 3.5 Blue box Vandorens to V12 3.5)

Vandoren Blue Box #3 1/2 reeds are actually harder than V12 #3 1/2 ...GBK

I have a dozen open boxes of reeds at home. The V12s play better with age in my experience. Buy a few boxes and put them aside for a while. A year or two can work wonders. Bad comes to worse, you can likely sell them to a friend if V12 3.5 is no longer your size. Heck, if you still have them a couple years from now, I'LL buy them from you.

Reed strength and achievement are not related. You could be playing that index of reeds for a while or even forever if you get a good result, so do yourself the favor and save the $ unless you get service and support from your local dealer that merits the extra cost. At even a conservative 1 box/month, order up. Sounds like it is worth it.

some of the online vendors give a 5% discount if you buy 3 or more boxes
check out ww&bw
sometimes you buy an unrelated item and get a even bigger discount on the reeds.

at the moment you can buy a lavoz reedguard for $2.50, and get v-12's discounted to $15.74. buy 3 or more boxes, you get 5% more off, taking you down to 14.87/box

and they're advertising free shipping - so pick up 5-10 boxes cheap while you can , and you beat the heck out of the local store prices

you can always sell them to friends or students if you switch strengths again and end up with leftovers

And why not mix strengths? Buy 10 boxes, and a couple of those can be 1/2 strength higher. The strengths included in a box vary anyway, giving you a chance to experiment. Just follow the practical help offered on this BB for breaking them in, have a dozen in your rotation, and what doesn't work set aside to try again a year from now.

if you buy a box of V12s from wwbw, do they give you a discount on the la Voz reed guard? that would be a deal

If you buy the V12s at regular price, I think they might. Wouldn't really consider that a deal though.
