Hi Mark !
Thanks for the info on the tunning ring. ! :) It sounds good..

I have to pull out my barrel a lot !! Mabye not an inch but .. wait one sec.. ::got the clarinet and a ruler ::. It's about 4 1/2 mm i have to pull out.. Would a tuning ring be helpful or is my clarinet just natural sharp ?

Not an inch or inch and a half! My clarinet would be falling apart. If you meant a millimeter to millimeter and a half, that'd be in the normal range.

Laurie-

The use of tuning rings is supposed to smooth-out the inside wall of the instrument. You may or may not be able to tell the difference. Another advantage is that once you determine the right combination of rings, you just insert them and assemble the instrument without worrying about how many millimeters to pull out.

Regarding natural sharpness or flatness, that is a function of the pitch the instrument was designed to play. If you pull out to tune one note, and that makes other notes out of tune, then the instrument may have been designed for a different pitch than you are tuning for.

On the other hand, if you pull out an inch and the instrument then plays in tune throughout its range, you just have a short barrel or mouthpiece!
