In baseball "hitting for the cycle" means that the batter has hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run all in the same game. I hit a career cycle yesterday; I hope you will all forgive me for sharing it in this forum.
Having played the Alto Sax part on Moussorgsky/Ravel "Pictures at an Exhibition" yesterday with the "Friday Morning Music Club Orchestra" means that at some point or other in my career I have performed all 4 single-reed parts in this work! Wasn't a paid gig, but I was joined by at least 4 other National Symphony retirees (oboe, violin, viola, double bass) in the orchestra, so it wasn't too shabby a band.
I've played the bass clarinet part dozens of times on at least 4 different continents; always felt a twinge of jealousy when a colleague (first Kenneth Douse, later Bill Wright) got a solo bow for a couple of minutes work while I toiled in relative obscurity on a much more challenging part.
Anyone else had a similar experience?

Way to go, Larry! I can't quite match your feat, but a couple of years ago I was asked to play the bass clarinet and second Eb clarinet parts in Mahler's First with a local orchestra, but for one of the rehearsals the first clarinetist couldn't make it so that night I played Bb/A clarinets in the same work. Not quite 'hitting for the cycle', but getting there.....
FWIW, last time I played "Pictures" with another local orchestra I got both the alto sax and bass clarinet parts, so I got to have my cake and eat it too, solo-wise.
Unfortunately, in neither case were the musicians on the National Symphony level! Oh well, we can dream......

Let's see. The only one I can think of is the Mozart Grand Partita. At one time or another I've played both clarinet parts and both basset horn parts.
By the way Larry, many years ago you picked out an A clarinet for me when I was studying with Bob Listokin in North Carolina. What a great horn it turned out to be. I've certainly gotten my moneys worth, that's for sure.

I've played all the parts in Stravinsky's Three Pieces for solo clarinet. Does that count?

That counts! Nice to have your feedback on the A clarinet after all these years; I think I selected one for Dan McKelway too. Small [clarinet] World, ain't it!

I did Pictures two years ago and not only played the alto sax solo, but covered the 3rd flute parts and played percussion for the last two movements. The only thing it seems I haven't done in that work is the clarinet parts!

Tony,
We'll have to count that one! I can sort of tie you on Don Giovanni--I've played first or second in the pit on several occasions where we played the stage band parts in the pit (on low-budget productions) while costumed "supers" mimed on stage! Imagine my amusement to see supers backstage carrying flutes and guitars while we were playing ob, cl, hn, bn music "down under".
I am thrilled to hear from you--yours was the first basset clarinet recording of K622 that I heard and owned. A cassette tape of it lived in my car for years and was a great source of joy and comfort to me on my way to the doctor's office for endoscopy and colonoscopies etc!
