 Recordings of Great Clarinet Players
Author: ClariBone

Hello

I conducted several searches and haven't found anything that answers my questions, so here they are!!! What recordings of great clarinet players would you use to help develop a good concept of sound?? What recordings make you want to break open the case and practice?? Thanks in advance for your thought on this matter!!!!!

In his book, The Educator’s Guide to the Clarinet, Thomas Ridenour gives a short list of clarinet recordings:

Harold Wright: Brahms Sonatas, Weber Concerto in Eb, Shepherd on the Rock, Weber Grand Duo.

John Manasse: Weber: Complete Works.

Larry Combs: Bernstein Sonata; Scriabin and Prokoffiev.

David Shifrin: Copland Concerto.

Louis Cahuzac: Hindemith Concerto.

Robert Marcellus: Mozart Clarinet Concerto.

Ricardo Morales: Trio and Sonata by Rudolph Koch.

The Caracas Clarinet Quartet.

Also, FYI: David Blumberg, who frequently posts to this board, has some nice Brahms MP3 files that you can download.

Hopefully, that is not the ONLY motivating factor to make you practice...GBK

You can just open the case, can play and practice. Recordings are learning resorces to guide myself to right way. We can be imspired by listening to them, but motivation in on ourselves.

Happy practicing!!

Harold Wright always inspires me to work hard. His sound is so gorgeous and his legato so smooth. Not to mention how thoughtful and expressive he is. It's rare that someone can pull you out of your surroundings and into their own private world.

I would add the early recordings of Gervase De Peyer to your listening list; in particular, his recordings of the Mozart Concerto, Spohr Concerto No. 1, Mozart Quintet and Brahms Quintet.

Adding a little International Flavor:

Antony Pay: Mozart concerto on period instrument.
Alessandro Carbonare: Mozart and Brahms Quintet.
Walter Boeykens: Quatuor pour la fin des temps.
Paul Meyer: 20th Century Music For Unaccompanied Clarinet
Ronald Van Spaendonck: Musique Française pour clarinette et piano
Benny Goodman: collector's edition (bernstein, copland, gould, bartok, stravinsky)

and many many more...

In addition to those already recommended:

The Clarinet Classics historical volumes, which present the unique tones and styles of the great players of the past, including Louis Cahuzac, Frederick Thurston, David Weber, Charles Draper, Gaston Hamelin and Reginald Kell http://www.clarinetclassics.com/history.htm

Boston Records has put out 5 wonderful Harold Wright CDs. Only vol. 1-4 appear on their site, http://www.bostonrecords.com/clarinet.htm, but vol. 5 has recently appeared, which includes amazing live recordings from concerts in the 1970s at the Library of Congress and his famous Mozart Concerto.

Boston Skyline Records put out Reginald Kell's 1950s recordings with the Fine Arts Quartet of the Mozart Quintet and the Brahms Quintet, http://www.bostonskylinerecords.com/catalog.html#135>. I've read that the company went out of business after a recent New York court ruling against Naxos, but their site is still up, so the CD may be available.

Two eastern European players, Bela Kovacs and Kalman Berkes, are my special favorites. They have a number of CDs on Naxos.

I would add the chamber music recordings of Donald Montanaro to that list.
Very smooth, elegantly phrased legato playing.
Very instructive.

Avail. from Boston Records. (see retail section of this website)

I dont want to show my age, but in the 50's Jack Brymer put out a brilliant recording of the Mozart Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

I have always striven to model my tone on his. Not quite made it yet!

I second Ken on Kalman Berkes. I have his CD of the Weber clarinet works and I enjoy it! His tone is a little different, but I like it. Also, it's cheap! What more could you ask for?

I'm suprised no one has mentioned Emma Johnson-she has a very British tone and uses Eaton clarinets. She also uses vibrato (which I personally like), so if you're into vibrato check it out. I own her Weber CD (I played Weber for contest so I bought some Weber CD's) and it is great.

I'd say to go to amazon.com and look up these performers names and listen to 1 minute clips, then buy any if you want! The 1 minute clips inspire me sometimes too!

Have fun!

Sabine Meyer: Mozart
on EMI: LC0110

This will send you running, not only to your clarinet case, but to your basset horn case, and your music publisher!

Thanks for the mention.

The 2nd mvt of the Brahms Trio is a good one for sound. It's only an mp3 file and a copy of the master so listen more for the connection of the notes as that is what to strive for. The 1st mvt at the bottom of the page was from way back in my early 20's (not that performance as the pianist and cellist had some major problems with the piece as both hadn't played it before and we only had 3 days to get it together.) 2-4 were played with the winner of the Artists International Competition and a Doctoral Cellist so they were good, but still "winging it". Mvt 1 was with Richard Sher of the Vermeer Quartet and former Principal Cellist St. Louis Sym. and Pamela Pyle who is the Staff Accompanist for Juilliard's Dorothy DeLay.

mvt 2-4 are what to listen to for sound.
